Even though we know the majority of our readers consider themselves to be true music nerds, capable of switching between genres effortlessly, we know that some of you out there have an aversion when it comes to certain genres. We also know that gritty country and folk probably are two of those genres. Well, today we’re going to bridge the gap between those who love beats, and those who love those twangy, back road sounds.

Coming off of their upcoming EP, The Carrier, Dirtwire has offered up this dusty little number as a free download. Backed by Beats Antique Records, “Damn Rooster” has an undeniable folksy charm, populated by only classic instrumentation often associated with folk music. The slight shake of a tambourine provides ample percussion for some wicked southern rock guitar riffs, delicate banjo plucking, and a rather impressive harmonica solo.

Fusing the two sounds together, this Oakland based duo has brought these timeless instruments to 2014 with smooth, rolling bassline. Coupled with some atmospheric elements and some country-style background noises, and we’re left with an engrossing soundscape that has us wanting to head out to the country this weekend.

A little over a week ago, Denmark native, Galimatias sent the internet down to the very depths of the ocean floor with his stunning track, “Ocean Floor Kisses.” We definitely felt as if we were caressing each and every groove found in the elusive abyss beneath us after subjecting our ears to such beauty. Just a few moments ago, Galimatias unleashed his latest original stunner, “Night Owl”, in which we were forced to step back for a moment and truly listen to this on an entirely different cognitive level.

“Night Owl” incorporates a multitude of production elements that collectively exude something truly ethereal. With its futuristic jabby synths, haunting reverberated vocals, and eerie chilled out vibe, Galimatias creates a type of darkness for all of us to emerge ourselves into. “Night Owl” delivers with such finesse and delicacy that collectively polish a side of electronic music we’ve yet to fully appreciate. You know you’re in for a wild ride when you see Party Favor roll up on your news feed with a tune that’ll make grandma want to put down the Direct TV Guide and go start a riot. Nothing like a good ol’ Monday anthem to get the blood pumping to the point where you literally can’t even anymore. Party Favor seems to be notorious for evoking such a vague and meaningless response, but we aren’t complaining because he always knows how to manipulate us into dancing in such ways we cannot speak of.

Earlier today, the Los Angeles based producer decided to take on the mental giant of a song, “Core” by RL GRIME to which the only way we could describe it was “bigroom house jungle noises that make you want to punch things”. Once you press play you’ll see how we came to that conclusion. Now, if you’re familiar with Party Favor, then you might know that he typically falls in the trap category of music (“Dat Booty” anyone?) but today he unleashed something beyond his sound – almost too absurd to describe. After having seen Party Favor perform his flip of “Core” the night before HARD Summer, we can confirm that everyone went bananas (us included). Since everyone seems to be having mixed reviews about it, we here at TMN think it’s fierce and diverse as hell – especially for Party Favor. We applaud him in his effort to push the limits of sound and we hope he continues to mold himself into an eclectic artist in this ever-evolving industry. As Kevin Hart would say (with aggressive hand claps in between each word) – “Do you boo boo, do you”.

After an extended hiatus, Dan Snaith, aka Caribou, made a splash a couple months back with the announcement of an upcoming album and subsequent release of the first single, “Can’t Do Without You,” a euphoric, building dance masterpiece that immediately took the blogosphere by storm. The talented producer returns this morning with the title track from the project and it is absolutely stunning. On “Our Love” Caribou draws the listener in with a smooth electronic groove but, rather than keep it low-key, at about 3 minutes he switches the beat up with an addicting bass-line that dares you not to dance.

In many ways, Caribou has chosen the perfect time for his return falling in place with the incredible direction that producers like Jamie xx, Four Tet, Mr. Carmack, and oft-collaborator Burial are taking with their respective, distinct brands of experimental bass music. [Lo-Fi] Spooky Black – Leaving EP

You were probably just as confused as we were when Spooky Black a.k.a Lil Spook, released his music video for “Without You” back in February. “Is this kid serious?”, “Why is this so low quality?”, and “What is type of music called?” were among some of the questions that came to mind.

With the release of his Leaving EP, the 15-year-old singer from Minnesota gives us a peek of what his music is really about. It consists of eight melancholy tunes, all titled in lower-cased letters and in such nonchalance. Collaborating with producers like Kid Hnrk, Psynum and Smitty The BG, this EP is a full on display of Spooky Black’s vocal talent and musical style over the dreamy, slow, lo-fi and occasional trap-style beats. The sustain added to his vocals accentuates the quirky yet creepy style of his songs, and with him dressing in all black attire in the “Without You” video, you can kind of guess where this is going.

Put it this way, Spooky Black is sort of like the R&B version of King Krule. Similar to his music, you either love it or hate it. We definitely love him in a weird kind of way. The whole EP is available off his soundcloud, so go get a copy here and tell us what you think!
