Earlier today, legendary experimental producer Flying Lotus took to Twitter to bless his fans with an unexpected project of 24 previously unreleased tracks. The eclectic collection, titled ideas+drafts+loops, definitely carries the feel of FlyLo’s earlier work with its deep, gritty sounds. Aside from the always innovative production, the tape includes appearances from Earl Sweatshirt, Shabazz Palaces, Thundercat, Doom, Baths, Mapei and Flying Lotus’s rapping alter-ego Captain Murphy among others. [Chill] Star Slinger – I/IV
I/IV
UK-based producer Star Slinger has a knack for stellar and unique remixes that completely transform the feeling of a song. Tonight, the talented artist takes on Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love” for a rework that turns the melodramatic original into a funky, smooth and danceable jam. “I/IV” is the first of a four-part series of edits to classic, soul artists that Star Slinger will be releasing leading up to the New Year. [NEW] SBTRKT – Audio/Visual Experiments
SBTRKT
While we still don’t have many clues about SBTRKT‘s upcoming studio album, we do know Aaron Jerome has definitely been playing around with some new sounds. “Playing around” may not even be the right term here, because this is audio gold.
Earlier today, the UK producer tweeted out a link saying nothing more than “audio/ visual experiments.” This led to the self-titled video below, which similar to his last endeavor, is a visual collaboration with Lorenzo Durantini. Just as the tweet suggests, this experience isn’t quite complete if you’re not paying attention to the images on your screen. The best way I can describe the clip is that it consists of drops of inky black liquid trickling in reverse, although I know I’m definitely not doing it justice.
The track itself is one of those songs that completely consumes you. With its dark and ominous overtones, leering synths, and lurching bass, it’s nearly impossible to tear your ears (and eyes) away. At only two and a half minutes in length, it’s a shame this doesn’t endure much longer (although I admit my brain probably would’ve melted if it did). If this doesn’t send chills up your spine, you definitely aren’t listening properly.
Check out the visuals below, and stay tuned for more from SBTRKT as he prepares for the release of his sophomore effort.
Rose Ryot – S6X [TMN PREMIERE]
S6X (KaterMukke Records)
Veiled in mystery, there’s very little we can share with London based artist Rose Ryot. While we would normally find a tidbit here or there on facebook, or maybe some information on twitter, for Rose Ryot, there’s nothing. When we say they don’t have anything on Soundcloud just yet, we literally mean they have nothing. Until today.
What we do know is this: today’s feature is the groups first track off of their first EP ‘Enter The Ryot’ due out on November 13 via legendary Berlin club Kater Holzig’s label “KatterMukke.” The tune, “S6X” is draped in sexuality, as indicated by the title of the track. It’s experimental in nature, exploding in frenetic drum beats, interspersed between haunting vocals and clanging bell chimes.
While this track has a very dark and ominous instrumentation, the vocals are enchanting enough to bring it back full circle. It’s quite remarkable, and we can’t wait to hear more.
[Remix] Drake – Come Thru (James Blake Version)
Come Thru (James Blake Version)
Just when you thought those Drake remixes were finally slowing down, we get this brand new revision of “Come Thru” courtesy of James Blake. While the original was a little too playful for my tastes, Blake’s rework adds a sense of urgency to the track, especially when the ominous synths kick in around the one minute mark where Drizzy begins his verse. Of course the transformation wouldn’t be complete without Blake adding in his own backing vocals, which compliment the dark overtones added through his production. Check out the tune above, and let us know your thoughts. Hopefully this means we’re one step closer to hearing that collaboration between the two artists we’ve all been anxiously waiting for.
[Electronica] Max Cooper & Tom Hodge – Fragmented Self pt. 1 EP
Rarely does the concept of pairing musically polar opposites pan out as both artists had intended, but the instrumental fraternization between electronic producer Max Cooper and classical composer Tom Hodge has resulted in a beautifully unique grouping of tracks. The first half of their joint effort, entitled the Fragmented Self pt. 1 EP is forward thinking music to say the least, beginning with the title track, which combines Hodge’s contemporary orchestrations with Max Cooper’s glitchy and confrontational cut up samples of the very same movements. At first listen “Fragmented Self” may come off as a bit rough, but when truly dissected is some of the more ambitious and exploratory music crafted within the last few years. Following up is “Von Der Klippe Fallen”, which again couples tech heavy warehouse elements with classical piano and a scooting bassline; while ending tune “Quantet” (also available as a free download) plays as the most melodic of the bunch, employing a dreamy synth charge behind a wall of refined strings. If your palate for music functions as the type which needs to be pushed and challenged, Fragmented Self pt. 1 should absolutely be worthy of a few jog-throughs.
