“In the Comfort Of” Tour w/ Monte Booker

Sango has been pulling double duty for a few years now, touring at a constant pace while also releasing full length works consistently through the year. Following the release of his Dave B. collaborative album Tomorrow in 2016 which we covered here, a nationwide tour kept the Seattle native busy well through the winter months. Shortly after the end of the Waldo/Sango tour, fans were gifted news that the star producer has been hard at work in the studio, a new release titled In the Comfort Of. While the latest project has not yet been circulated, Sango revealed the first single titled “Dance for Blessings” on the night of his Bay Area performance. Hoping to catch some of his new music as well as the evolution of his live performance since his October show, the Ninja team set out to the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco to evaluate.

Unsurprisingly, Sango did not disappoint. With an advanced set up comprised of multiple CDJs as well as the ever-challenging Novation Launchpad at his disposal, Sango took a distinctly different turn from previous performances. Mashing some of the Brazilian percussion-based elements made popular in his Da Rocinha album series, Sango sampled a healthy dose of hip hop and R&B tracks that were staples to our collective millenial childhoods. Starting with a reimagined version of UGK’s 2007 “Int’l Players Anthem”, Sango had the crowd engaged from Bar 1. Leaving a mark with his remixes of Justin Timberlake, Craig David, Missy Elliot and many more, Sango wrapped up the show with a satisfying Stwo remix to his most impressive song, “Middle of Things”.

Future bass meets dance, meets instrumentals, meets bouncy synths; Magnifico and Taptone’s “Sonata” released on Lowly Palace, has taken a bit everything and melded it together into a dramatic production that we’re 100% on board with.

Upon pressing play the track builds into a climactic drop laden with the all familiar sound of trumpets, an instrument that adds a positive flair in so many great productions. This infectious track delves into an unexpected moment of a smoother melody where, yet again, an instrumental is featured, this time luscious piano chords slowing everything down before reviving into the upbeat dance track. The back and forth between this fluttering heartbeat of a track leaves us feeling satisfied but ready for more. Lush Records is one of the best boutique labels you can find. Their most recent release, a free download by SMiTHMUSiX called “Try” is a hit through and through. The tinge of R&B in this one is so incredible, but it’s not surprising coming from a release on a label that specializes in pushing music of that style and caliber.

“Try” isn’t solely the work of SMiTHMUSiX as Tomi contributed to its creation as well. Together they churned out a radio-friendly single that is as silky as it is smooth. It’s a bit future, a bit R&B, but all dope. The quivering synth work alongside the vocal chops can be a bit overplayed in future bass, but these two manage to really excel with what they offer up. “Try” is a juicy concoction that you’ll be enjoying on a daily basis. You have no reason not to, as this has been released as a free download.

The duo smle has been putting smiles on our faces ever since they launched a couple years back. Whether it’s with their originals or remixes, like their brand new one of “Heartache,” their work is always something we look forward to. Not only do we look forward, but we’re not disappointed once we have what we desire.

Max Styler and Colt Matthews’ single got flipped from its indie dance sound to a future-friendly one. It wasn’t too much of a leap given the style’s influence on the original, but smle made it their own in a huge way. We thought the original couldn’t get any better, but this one may take the cake. Whenever that discussion even comes up, you know you have a bangin’ remix on your hands. Leave it smle to rival the original, which they’ve done countless times. It’s no wonder they were picked for an official remix!
