[Event Review] Lido gives it Everything in his return to Bay Area

dnp_5929

As a trailblazer in the field and a posterboy to the new electronic movement, Peder Losnegård is far beyond needing introduction. Abandoning previous musical incarnations, Lido emerged as a preeminent producer a few years back, co-creating Halsey’s Badlands LP and touring around the country in support of his own works. While also gaining some notoriety for credits on works with Chance the Rapper, Alison Wonderland, and Banks, his star continued to grow brighter by the month. Over the course of 2016, Lido has made major headway in cementing his place among the dominant producers of the era – along with the likes of Flume, Hudson Mohawke, Cashmere Cat, and Jack Garratt.

Bringing his North American fan base a much anticipated step away from reality, the prodigal record producer, songwriter, and occasional rapper embarked on an ambitious 14-date tour in support of last month’s wildly popular sophomore release, Everything.

[Future Bass/Trap] STEL LEO – Opal [TMN Premiere]

STEL★LEO
Opal [The Music Ninja Premiere]

There’s nothing we love more than kicking off the day armed with a freshly banging premiere for our Ninja faithful. Stel Leo is a genre-skirting, Bermudian artist who has had releases with Team Supreme, Top Cats, TheMOB and Friends with Robots; and also played live alongside STWO and more tastemaking artists. Today the electronic style bender touches down on TMN with brand new single “Opal”, and our fire is glowingly stoked to share it with our lovely readers.

A crisply layed two-step drum beat patterns “Opal” before giving way into a luscious waterfall of thumping low-end, popping snare placement, and a swath of clicky percussive elements which all culminate in a sticky-sweet melody. Although it wields a highly synthetic sonority, “Opal” simultaneously feels very soulfully tactile and personal, while still brandishing a call-to-arms to get to the dancefloor. While we’re sure most of our U.S. Ninjas will be more concerned with the important item on today’s docket -the Presdiential Election or something like that, we heard- but for a little distraction, stream our premiere of Stel Leo’s “Opal” above.

Get To Know Khamsin With New Single + Q&A [TMN Interview]

Khamsin & LeMarquis
Leaving (feat. Saavan)

Khamsin has got it going on. He just released his “Leaving” collaboration alongside LeMarquis and Saavan that hosts the title for his EP, and he’s got an official remix coming out for ZHU by the end of the year.

Luckily, we caught up with the French producer in the dojo to answer a few of our questions ahead of the Holiday season. Before we get to the interview, let’s focus in on his EP’s title track, “Leaving,” which is currently out now on iTunes, alongside three other tracks. “Leaving” is a cool future bass record whose acoustic elements set it apart from the vast majority of similar tunes. Once your ears become privy to its lush tones, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Have a listen while you read through the short, but insightful Q&A we had the honor of hosting with Khamsin.

TMN: Can you tell us more about your origins as a producer? When did you first start producing and did you have any musical experience before that?

K: I’ve been into music production like 3 or 4 years ago thanks to a friend from high school. We started DJ’ing in my bedroom with a mask and post it on Youtube (Good old times ! Ahah), then he showed me a few how to create sounds from a computer. It was a kind of weird feeling for me, I was happy and excited about all the possibilities a DAW can afford and frustrated to not knowing that much at the same time. I started playing with sample & VST and I never followed any tutorials, I prefer discover myself to create my own workflow & tips.
I tried to learn guitar a few years before but I gave up (and I regret!). Today, I’m learning slowly but surely the piano & the drums.

TMN: Can you tell us more about where you’re from? What kind of music were your friends and other around you listening to when you were growing up?

K: I’m from a small village in south of France and I now live in Paris. I’ve been A LOT into Pop & Rock music as a teen with my friends, I remember listening to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peepers, Arctic Monkeys, The Verve, Oasis & also bands like Sum 41, Blink 182, Gorillaz… Then I discovered electronic music with Daft Punk, Justice & Ratatat. Apart of this, I have a strong love for RNB Classics & Classical music thanks to my Mom & Grandmother

TMN: I love how your music showcases elements of electronic, pop, and rock. How did you come to develop the current sound you have?

Thank you! I’m glad that you’re feeling all of these colors in my music. This was one of the main challenge around this EP, to build something that mix this future bass trend and some personal influences. As I said before, I have a Pop Rock background and I think it impact my music today more thane ever. I’m currently looking to get out of my comfort zone for the next project and melt more & more influences. I want to create a real identity around this project, a music & visual identity that’ll be the fruit of my experiences & what people attempt live.

TMN: Do you have any other upcoming remixes or collaborations we can look forward to?

K: I’m actually working on few new originals and as I said before I’m experimenting a lot of things with drums, synth, weird effects to find my own sound, something that fit with my vision of the project. In the meantime, I got two remixes coming out soon. I’m really excited about the remix I did for ZHU. It will be out by the end of the year, I just can’t wait to show it to you guys!

TMN: Do you have plans to tour anytime soon?

K: I’d love to, it’s in the plan for next year hopefully, I’ll still doing DJ sets for now, but I will start with my live set soon. With synth, drums & midi controllers, it’s a lot of work but damn I love doing this !

[Future] Droeloe – Bon Voyage

DROELOE
Bon Voyage

Dutch artists Droeloe are back with yet another unparalleled production. This time, they took an exceptionally wide step to release this special track. Their latest, “Bon Voyage,” is one of many “cracked codes” involved in their latest creative project; a full on “Monstercat hack.” Engaging their fans and listeners by tasking them to piece together forthcoming releases through mysterious videos and a Monstercat website takeover, they’ve finally exposed their newest single.

“Bon Voyage” exposes Droeloes’ consistent abilities to deviate from typical future electronic music as the song encompasses uniquely crafted synths and melodies that are near impossible to resist. With an unpredictable chorus and innovative sound, we can confidently say that this tune was well worth the anticipation.

[Future] ID – FKNU

ID
FKNU

Usually when you see ID, it’s for the song, not the artist. This is not the case for the song “FKNU” by an unknown entity. We can’t confirm exactly who it is, but feel free to speculate to your hearts desire.

While you do that, you’re going to be singing the lyrics to “FKNU” while the beat plays over and over in your head. It’s got the catchy factor of a big pop hit, but also the vibes of a future track. There’s no doubting this would have made a killer Summer anthem, but that’s no issue as you can simply save it for the next one. We’re ready and waiting for the reveal on who this is, because “FKNU” is one dope record. Hate to say it myself, but it certainly sounds like the youngest Jonas brother. Would Alan Garner of The Hangover series approve of this venture if it is indeed him? We think so.

[Electronic] Fancy Cars – Set Me On Fire (ft. Brandon Hall)

Fancy Cars
Set Me On Fire ft. Brandon Hall

Fancy Cars may only have four songs out at the moment, but he’s already making waves in the future bass and pop communities. His latest tune, co-produced by Minnesota and featuring striking vocals from Brandon Hall, is a crash course in the new direction that accessible pop music is beginning to take. Each verse carefully builds to a fever pitch that crashes out of your speakers with gusto and glamour, and if you are at all familiar with Majestic Casual, it should come as no surprise that this is their release. Their tendency to lean toward a sense of escapism and emotion is exactly what Fancy Cars strives for. With “Set Me On Fire”, he’s certainly accomplished that.
