[Event Preview] CRSSD Festival – San Diego 3/14-3/15

Spring is around the corner, which means that it’s almost festival season! As one of our first stops, TMN is going to the CRSSD festival in San Diego. Taken place at the Waterfront Park on March 14 and 15, CRSSD fest features some of the frontrunners and up-and-comers in today’s electronic music. Powerhouses including Empire of the Sun, Chromeo, Odesza, Flight Facilities are headlining the festival at the “Ocean View Live” stage, while deeper acts like Kaytranada, Thomas Jack, Bakermat and Bixel Boys will try to win the crowd at “The Palms” stage.

The three-stage set up will definitely give a refreshing feel to all festival-goers. Thousands will gather at Waterfront Park and dance their pants off while overseeing the beautiful city of San Diego. With its popularity rising at such a high rate, CRSSD festival is representing sunny San Diego by stepping its game up. We are very excited to be able to witness the very first debut of the festival, as there will be many more in the future.

Jack Garratt finally broke a short silence since his buttery smooth tune, “The Love You’re Given,” and graced our ears with a big shift in sound on “Chemical.” His unrelenting and powerful vocals shine through in the intro, supplemented only by claps and short risers until the grating synths bust in for a surprising and upbeat switch up. This tune showcases even more of Garratt’s flawless falsetto and his production potential within just three and a half minutes, and every second of it resounds clean and clear.

“Chemical” is an intriguing medium between MNEK and Chet Faker, while creating an aura all its own with ease. Jack Garratt breaks the mold by being a multi-faceted threat and excelling at it, as evident by his past two tunes. “Chemical” is no different and the change of pace finds Garratt catching his stride early and quickly. London won’t be short on amazing artists anytime soon with acts like Jack Garratt crafting material like this. Shake up your routine with something truly stimulating and stream “Chemical” above!

We’ve been featuring the borderline industrial, bass heavy dance sounds of Sydney shakers Human Movement, for over half a year now, most recently with “To Be”, and it seems the rest of the blogosphere has begun to catch up as well. After having debut single “Shake” picked up by Australia’s almighty Triple J Radio as well as issuing a monster mix on Skrillex’ Nest HQ, Human Movement returns with another genre eschewing cut, “Paradise”. The Australian club beasts stick to their guns in terms of ambience, painting a dark dance picture through the use of a minimalistic bassline, evovling percussion and the lovely utilization of debuting vocalist Eliza Sol. About the track Human Movement relayed: “We really tried to focus more on the overall groove and flow of the track, we really weren’t satisfied with the standard kick – clap minimal percussion groove…wanting to keep the track under a really dark and minimalistic vibe, but with the compatibility of a female vocalist. It worked out really well as our good friend Eliza ( who we didn’t know even sang!) who nailed it.” We actually think all parties involved nailed it. Now listen for yourself.

After their last single “Revive”, which made an appearance in the 116th edition of our excellent weekly playlist The Chill Dojo, L.A.’s Coyote Kisses again touch down on the hallowed grounds of TMN with a brand new original “Sunny Day”. This one comes just before festival season kicks off, speaking wonderfully to that vibrant energy which tends to accompany such a time of the year. Coyote Kisses deftly fold an effervescent, arpeggiated synth progression in with crisp, rolling drums and fractured hi-hats, creating their own taste of impending warm weather through the scope of composed instrumentation. We think they summed it up much better than us however, stating: “We dragged all our equipment onto a dock in Florida and channeled the energy of the passing pelicans and seagulls. Somewhere along the line, seagulls turned into skittle-shooting automatic lasers. L.A. via Texas pop vocalist Chelsea Lankes has most recently been permeating radio and blog waves with her latest single “Down For Whatever”. While the original is your proto-typical pop sound of modern day youth and the eager desire to live in the moment, another pair of L.A. inhabitants, and a duo whom has grown near and dear to our hearts over the years, Carousel, injects new life within Lankes’ original. Rather than follow an airy synth-pop blueprint as one might have expected from the former Berklee students, Carousel walks “Down For Whatever” into a two-step drum pattern and weighty synths, dipping into deeper, late night harkening instrumentation. We love seeing this more aphotic side of Jackson Philips and Kevin Friedman’s constantly evolving project, and here’s to hoping we get some more of that brooding take on pop from their machine filled studio in the near future. IT’S FRIDAY. Kick off the weekend with a ‘saxual’ new tune from one of the best future funk masters out there, GRiZ! Stop Trippin’ is the first taste we’re getting from a new album (Say It Loud) due out in March, and it is a delectable slice indeed. A little bit of trap, old school vocals, and that slick sax culminate into an upbeat number that jumps out of your speakers like its house is on fire. Funk is alive and well thanks to GRiZ and his upcoming project is guaranteed to knock socks off worldwide once it comes out. The Say It Loud tour is going global in February and tickets are available now. He always puts on an amazing show, so you definitely won’t want to miss him in your city!
