[Get Crunk] Friday Party Playlist (Vol. 116)

Afternoon ninjas, ninjette Brooke here reporting for FPP duty. This week I decided to be extra generous by loading all of you up with a shit ton of free music to help get you from Point A to Lost in the next 2 hours. Since last week was a little on the stale side, this week will make you question the Urban Dictionary definition of “Party”. Loaded with a range of genres from trap (twerk, twerk, twerk) dubstep (Blink-182 wub wub), electro house, glitch hop, deep house, etc., this weeks FPP is bound to turn you from that wallflower in the corner to Beyonce in the club.

As you prepare for another weekend of shenanigans, make sure you download this weeks FPP so you can turn up on the go. So what are you waiting for? Drink up the Fireball, crank up the volume, and dance yo booties off because it’s officially the weekend and you need to get crunk.

Until next week. #danceirresponsibly

[Festival Review] TMN Dives Into Denver’s Underground Music Showcase

If you’re wondering whether or not Colorado’s music scene is embodied solely by bass-heavy barons devastating Red Rocks on a regular basis, or the constant national and international accolades given to Beta Nightclub year after year, you can stop that right now. While much of the Mile High City’s music scene’s notoriety falls into those two aforementioned venues, The UMS flexed it’s mighty indie muscle two weekends ago, showing the city, the state, the nation, and the world that a handful of tiny venues deserves just as much attention.

Taking over one of Denver’s most prized neighborhoods, The UMS flooded the numerous dive bars, galleries, and restaurants that adorn the colorful South Broadway stretch. In a meticulous blend of some well known acts coupled with hyper-indie (so indie, even the hippest of your friends haven’t heard about them yet) there was more than enough to appease the auditory appetite of the thousands of festival goers that flooded the streets.

Knowing that there was too much music for one ninja to cover, we had to break up The UMS between two from our clan. Check out what Matty and Clayton experienced during their first full experience of this must-attend event.

While we couldn’t yet make it out in full force to the first night of Denver’s incredible Underground Music Showcase, we did manage to make it to one of our favorite electronic artist’s sets, with CRL CRRLL (pronounced Carl Carrell) at Blue Ice. An abbreviated set to say the least, CRL CRRLL managed to warp our minds through different texturized soundscapes played off of his bevy of machines, MIDI controllers and gadgets on stage through the 40 minute performance. This was the second time we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing him live, as he played our TMN presented show in Denver with Young & Sick (which if you haven’t heard his remix of their tune “Glass”, check it out below) and it seems in the short span of time, CRLCRRLL’s reached a more fluid, comfortable and mature stage presence.

[Chill/Future/Trap] The Weeknd – Often (Free n Losh Remix)

The Weeknd
Often (Free n Losh Remix)

Rolling off of the wave of success experienced on their first original release, “Lost”, Free n Losh have returned to remix “Often” from one of R&B’s most intriguing artists, and a favorite of quite a few Ninjas here; The Weeknd. Perhaps some of the most versatile electronic producers at the moment with credits on Mac Miller tunes, an official Pretty Lights remix and multiple trips to the almighty Hype Machine Top Ten charts through gleaming and cutting edge takes on dance genres; Free n Losh have peeled back yet another layer of their collective production psyche with this latest remix. The Canadian duo blends a distinct steel drum over a luscious two-step melody and  and layer it all seductively amongst a sea of contorted snare kicks and hi-claps for a sound completely their own. With every passing release Free n Losh continually impress the hell out of our ears, and this cut might be one of our favorite from their entire catalogue. Grab the free download here, and slip into something sexy for this one, it might get a little hot.

[Event Review] Chet Faker – 6/3/14 – Bluebird Theater – Denver, CO

Chet Faker
Talk Is Cheap

On a blustery Wednesday night in Denver, some of our Ninjas were treated to an intimate live set from one of Australia’s most revered electronic exports, Chet Faker, and the sold out crowd in attendance at the Bluebird Theater weren’t slighted in the least. An early set from NYC’s Antonio Cuna, who is much more readily recognized under his alias Sweater Beats, lit the stage wonderfully while tuning the pre-packed venue’s collective cochlear cavities for what was to come. Sweater Beats paced us with a veritable smattering of his own breezy two-step and four-four bass rhythms, leaving the perfect amount of vibe on the floor for the night’s main event while stoking what seemed to be a very well educated crowd of music minds.

When the house lights came down, and a collective pandemonium seemed to consume our congregation’s psyche, we quickly and clearly realized why a majority of the crowd left the comfort of their couches on a Wednesday night. It’s pretty safe to say that since our first collision with Nicholas Murphy back in 2011, along with the 2012 pensive soundscape that was the Thinking Textures EP, and most recently the incredible Chet Faker debut long player Built on Glass;  we’d been patiently waiting for this moment for years. Immediately, an incredibly inviting atmosphere drew most attendees’ attention center stage to Chet Faker, who tonight was playing just a one-man set rather than the live projects we’ve been seeing over the last few years involving guitar, bass and drums. No, tonight it was a stripped down MIDI controller, an intimidating Akai MPC machine which must’ve been loaded with literally thousands of samples, functioning as much of the concert’s center piece and Murphy’s haunting, melancholic yet syrupy sweet vocal chords. Not even an expensive lighting or stage rigging setup, just a simple set, one man, an army of electronics and the house lights. He toyed with his fans right off the bat, seeming to tune and shape beats out of thin air off of his gadgetry strewn table, and before we realized Chet Faker was actually cobbling together whole pieces and drum patterns from his library, “I’m Into You'” had suddenly been fully formulated and we were thrown headfirst into the hour long instrumental assemblage.

Chet Faker rolled through tried and true tunes like Flume collaborations “Drop The Game” and “Left Alone”, Thinking In Textures favorites “Cigarettes and Chocolate” and “Everything I Wanted”, and even his chart defining cover of “No Diggity”, which had the packed house doing their best Blackstreet impersonations when we were tasked with carrying its chorus; before rounding out with a heaping dose of Built On Glass selections. The effort, or lack thereof, with which Chet Faker strung highs and lows together was truly a sight to behold and by the time the encore of “Talk Is Cheap” took us home, it felt as if this quaint sea of people were very figuratively eating out of his palm.

It was another lovely night of live music for us, a truly sonic journey and a perfect way to satisfy our Chet Faker fix… for maybe another year.

[Review] Monstercat 017 – Ascension

After successfully topping the album charts on iTunes Dance and solidifying themselves as one of the top independent labels in dance music, Monstercat has proven that they are the next driving force in todays industry. Housing artists such as Krewella, Pegboard Nerds, Haywyre, Vicetone, and more, the label has made it clear that their forward thinking mindset, along with their elite team full of passionate artists, are revolutionizing the music world day by day.

With the forefront of their operations being among some of the most well renowned talent out there, it was only a matter of time until the next wave of Monster-kittens made their rounds to showcase their ground-breaking productions. Well, ninjas, the wait is officially over because Monstercat dropped an intense load of eclectic feels on the world last week with the release of their 17th compilation album, Ascension. Including artists such as Aero Chord, Rootkit, SCNDL, Varien!, and more, this album showcases a wide array of genres that will tickle everyone’s fancy. The ninjas here at TMN have been listening to this compilation album over and over again, to which we find something new and enticing each and every time. Through each song we are able to senselessly move to the beautiful melodies and discover the intrinsic meaning that each artist conveys in their masterpieces. In the end, one will have lost all sense of their existing state of mind and embark on an intense journey into this lucid world full of numbing basslines, spine-tingling melodies, and ear-shattering breakdowns strong enough to melt your face off.

As music continues to evolve and artists begin to experiment with production, Monstercat continues to deliver us that next big sound. Their ability to stay ahead of everyone else is what separates them from the rest of the crowd, and for that, we cannot wait until these kittens bring forth the next round of talent to make us question the word around us. Ascension has given us that conclusive resolve within ourselves and is proof that Monstercat knows the true definition of artistry. Make sure to support these artists and purchase your copy today; we promise you will not regret this decision in any way shape or form.

[Glitch Hop] Jontron – Desert Song

Jontron
Desert Song

After a pilgrimage to the desert for that three day adventure that so many people are talking about, local Denver DJ/Producer Jontron is already back at the keyboard drawing up some tunes based on his inspirations from Coachella.

Utilizing samples from the Temptations, Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel, Jontron has taken a departure from his club-centric house style to provide his fans with a groovy, poolside pleaser that calls on associations of fellow Coloradan glitch hop producers.

So, pour yourself a nice, tall drink and throw on your boardshorts. It’s summertime, as far as Jontron is concerned.

[TMN DOES MIAMI RIGHT] Ultra + WMC 2014 Review

Welcome to my Ultra-world. It is a land filled with sun, sex, sounds, and sea. The energy here is relentless, the pace is fast. People come from around the globe to experience the narcotic pulse of bass that emanates throughout the city. Come with us as we voyage in to the depths of debauchery and dance, and experience the glory that is known as Miami Music Week.

Pool parties are a mainstay of the Winter Music Conference, so let our journey begin in South Beach at the Raleigh Hotel pool for the DIM MAK Miami Beach Party. Here we can observe the one and only Steve Aoki in his natural habitat. Aoki provides copious entertainment for all, and he is generous enough to even give some of his devoted following cake and champagne! Though very little of these accoutrements actually make it in to anyone’s mouths, it’s the thought that counts. Other notables to be taken from the environment are Deorro, The Chainsmokers, 3lau, Felix Cartel, and Autoerotique. Amidst the hard hitting, fist pumping, in-your-face beats that DIM MAK records is known for, we can’t help but to be pleased with the plethora of beauty and movement that surrounds us. A large pool waits patiently behind, framed in a soft blue hue and coaxing weary partiers towards it cool waters with the promise of buoyancy. As the party wanes, we trickle with the masses back on to Collins Avenue and become engulfed in an ocean of neon, skin, and cars that cost more than most families homes.

’New Dim Mak Music!’

Back across the bay and just a couple miles north of the Ultra Music Festival, we now travel to a chic and sensuous lounge nestled in the heart of Wynwood. The famed area is known for its walls; ever-changing murals blanket the buildings. The crackle and hiss of spray paint can be heard around every corner and an aroma of acrylic permeates the nostrils like a vandal’s potpourri. Be mindful of the razor wire on your right as we meander towards The Social Lubricant. TSL’s staff holds up to the lounge’s name, offering courteous and brisk service along with reasonable drink prices (for Miami). Absorb the deep house beats put on tonight by the likes of underground sensation Thugfucker. That’s right, Thugfucker. While the American and Icelandic combination of Greg Oreck and Holmar Filipsson could certainly play until 5am, the line up tonight will not require them to. Both of the boys are in excellent spirits this evening from the looks of it. Their connection with their crowd is palpable. Each twist and turn of their set seems to mean something, each bassline tickles the stapes in a profound way. Don’t forget about Thugfucker’s buddies either. Matt Tolfrey, Nick Curly, Francesca Lombardo, and many others are here as well to ensure auditory satisfaction. Are you hungry? There’s a sushi bar in the back corner to compliment your ethanol if you so choose…I would highly suggest it, we’ll be here awhile.

’Thugfucker live’

We’ve shown you South Beach and gone underground in Wynwood, so let’s venture now to what everybody has been waiting for; let’s go to Ultra Music Festival 2014! A cab is necessary because parking is the worst clusterfuck you’ve ever seen in your life. I am scheduled to interview Art Department, Paper Diamonds, and Vello Virkhaus prior to partaking in any of the festivities. You’ll notice that there, regrettably, is no press area within Ultra’s grounds…there IS, however, a mega yacht docked right next to the grounds that we can use. After delightful conversation coupled with a Krewella photo-op and a chance brush by with Zedd (he has sparkly eyes, pay no mind to my screaming “Zedd! You’re awesome!”), we tromp through the hidden workings back stage to make our way over to the Underground stage. Cue the sensory overload!
