[Future Funk] Grizmatik – Digital Liberation is Mad Freedom

What do you get when you combine two of the funkiest electronic producers in the game right now? The answer: one of the most exciting artist collaborations to happen in 2012 and hopefully a long time to come. Forget about any other equation you’ve learnt in your lifetime. Griz + Gramatik = Grizmatik is all you need to know. Now mash together the titles of their respective albums, Mad Liberation and #digital freedom, and you have yourself the perfect debut track. Everything about this artist collaboration is a match made in heaven. On paper, on a screen, through your speakers. It all just makes perfect sense.

After teasing eagerly awaiting fans for the past few weeks, #DLIMF has finally been released, and with these two artists being some of the strongest supporters of free music, you can be rest assured they are gifting us once again with the download. The track itself is everything you could hope for from the combined forces of these two giants of funk, feeding your soul with infectious breaks and your lust for gritty electronic synths. And then comes the drop, a clear statement from the duo that they aren’t afraid to get down and dirty. These artists have never been content with being pigeon-holed into one style of production, and if this is any indication of the potential of their unified powers, then just about anything is possible. It’s fair to say that excitement levels are pretty damn high for what they come up with next.

[Glitch/Funk] Steve Miller Band – Fly Like an Eagle (Psymbionic Remix)

We all know that remixing a classic is dangerous business, but taking on one that has already been reworked by the likes of Pretty Lights? Now that’s plain insanity. However, with great risk comes great reward, and bass producer Psymbionic delivers a seriously funky glitched out edit of the 70’s jam with huge success. Layered with infectious organ samples and guitar riffs, the winning combination of classic instruments with modern electronic sounds ensures that this effort won’t just live in the shadows of the more renowned mix. In fact, it even holds some advantages over it. For one, it’s fully released, secondly it’s a free download, and more importantly, Psymbionic uses the uplifting vocals from the iconic chorus that were never included in the Pretty Lights version, which always seemed like a massive tease. Thankfully, this track makes the whole experience feel complete and the original has certainly been done justice. 90’s kids, now is the appropriate time to listen to those pangs of nostalgia and hunt down that copy of Space Jam on VHS buried in the cupboard somewhere. I know I will.

[Album Review] MartyParty – MVP

A couple days ago MartyParty dropped a massive trapped out LP titled, MVP. Featuring everything from Purple Trap to Glitched out Dub, and all of it is original. Some notable tunes you don’t want to miss is this intro titled “MVP”, which drops some clever samples and a heavy 808 infused beat. Possibly the catchiest tune on the whole EP, “All In The Game” dropping a funky 8-Bit melody backed with massive synths and heavy bass. Probably the most unique track is “Angry Beethoven” and it features some laser infused wobbles and melodic chords that come together flawlessly. “Big Block” is the filthiest tune on MVP, and it brings some grimey hard hitting Dub mixed with swirling synths, that hit at all the right times. [Dubstep/Glitch] 501 – Smash EP

Over the years Never Say Die Records has become notorious for showcasing some of the most diverse and talented producers in all of EDM. Earlier this year, NSD debuted finnish producer 501’s hit single “Headrush ft. Belle Humble” which propelled 501 into an extremely successful year. After releasing spectacular remixes and original tracks on labels such as Big Beat and Circus Records, 501 decided to close out an immensely successful year with the release of his latest Smash EP. The EP consists of 4 original tracks which clearly embody what makes 501 so impressive as a producer. His sound design is bar none, combining profound bass with meticulously crafted melodies and synths. 501’s creative genius fuses genres and clearly knows no limits. The title track, “Smash!” is an impressive glitch-hop tune that personifies 501’s unparalleled ability to imbedded high energy wobbles with harmonious melodies and vocals to create a truly unique original tune. Another track off the EP and my personal favorite, “Letting Go”, showcases beautiful top-line vocals overlaying a truly anthemic bassline. “Letting Go” is a masterpiece and a must listen for any fan of dubstep. The other two tracks, “Broken Notes” & “Feel For You” are fantastic as well bringing a refreshingly original sound to 140 BPM.

All in all, the Smash EP is a fantastic piece of work which clearly represents that 501 is a name every EDM fan should  begin getting acquainted with if not already. Give the entire EP a listen, download a copy of “Smash!” which 501 released for free, and make sure to show 501 your appreciation for all of his hard work on Facebook.

[Trap/Glitch] Lil Wayne – A Milli (BUSTED by heRobust)

Back in the day when mashups burst onto the music scene, artists such as Girl Talk, Milkman, and Supermash Bros. dominated the movement by exposing their superior sampling ability; mixing and mashing sometimes hundreds of samples together to create a unique audible work of art. Although mashups have seem to have lost a lot of their pizzazz and appeal that they once provoked, I personally am always ecstatic when I begin listening to a song and encounter ingeniously clever sampling.

Atlanta based producer, heRobust, accomplished just that with his glitched-out trap remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli”. Beginning the track with a witty sample of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, heRobust adds a healthy dose of distorted bass transforming this track from start to end. This remix is worth at least ‘One Million Dollars’ so make sure to snag this free download and show heRobust some love on Facebook.

[Dubstep/Glitch] Rusko – Kapow EP

Christopher Mercer AKA Rusko may be without a doubt one of the most incendiary forces in all of EDM. After the release of his last full length album Songs in March it became wildly apparent that the tension was brewing between the English Dubstepper and his former label Mad Decent. Despite the apparent reconciliation between Mad Decent and Rusko surrounding his last release, Rusko came out a couple weeks ago to delcare that his latest effort, his Kapow EP would be released for free by none other than himself. Relying solely on his fans for promotion, Rusko has decided to release his music how and when he wants. The EP features four distinct tracks which clearly display that Rusko is pushing the boundaries of both his creativity and productional ability all the while maintaining those signature Rusko wobbles and squeals we’ve grown to love. Featuring tracks like “Bring It Back”  a more melodic tune chalk full of squeaks, bleeps and bloops to “Like This” a glitch-hop infused banger featuring vocal samples from the Crookers remix, this EP is without a doubt some of Rusko’s most diverse work. Make sure to give each song a listen, grab the free download and if you’re a fan make sure to spread the word. Enjoy!

Kimbra instantly garnered fame after being the voice behind Gotye’s masterpiece “Somebody I Used to Know”. However, despite contributing the vocals to one of the most played and remixed tracks of 2012, Kimbra has also invested in her solo career with both an LP & EP released via Warner Brothers Record Inc. Now, Kimbra gets the royal remix treatment from none other than the king of glitch/neurofunk, Opiuo. The Australian producer transforms Kimbra’s original tune “Come Into My Head” (which we covered here) into a glitch-infused banger emphasizing Kimbra’s airy vocals with heavy drum kicks and loads of funky bass.
