[Dance] GEMOLOGY – First & Last (Glastrophobie Remix) [TMN Premiere]

GEMOLOGY
First & Last (Glastrophobie Remix)

Back in September we had the blissful opportunity to debut the first ever release (and one of our favorite singles in 2014), “First & Last” from Natasha Chitayat and Joanie Wolkoff’s stirring synth-pop project GEMOLOGY. The tune, with its schooled instrumentation and clinging assortment of eclectic electronic sounds was a sitting duck for remixers across all genres to try their hands at, and the first entry into GEMOLOGY’s remix catalog comes from another TMN mainstay; German born Glastrophobie, in the form of another welcome ‘TMN Premiere’. The clearly schooled dance-smith equips the tune with a delicate balance of the original’s alluring hook with another pattern of airy uplifting synths that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Kygo remix. Furthermore, Joanie Wolkoff’s vocals echo across as initmately as ever amongst Glastrophobie’s sonic sound kit; sounding as close as a shared conversation across a pillow. It’s lovely to see a tune’s original soul kept intact while also shifting cadence and mood simultaneously, which to us solidifies Glastrophobie’s grasp on a developing and unique sound. Stream Glastrophobie’s remix of “First & Last” above, and check out more sounds from the budding artist here.

Moby – The Last Day ft. Skylar Grey (TYR Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

Moby
The Last Day (TYR Remix)

While most of the population of Boulder is probably still recovering from an epic night out at Decadence, or any one of the other NYE parties, TYR is up and at it, providing the fuzzy-headed, uneasy-stomached music lovers with something to help ease the pain.

Taking his crack at Moby and Skylar Grey’s dreary yet dreamy tune, this up-and-coming Colorado producer has given new life to “The Last Day.” Elements of Skylar Grey’s vocals are perfectly sampled and placed meticulously with a danceable beat, some tropical synths, and a buzzing bassline. While still retaining it’s ethereal vibes, this interpretation definitely takes on a more upbeat attitude, providing listeners with something that glows with originality.

As with all good remixes, TYR has payed homage to the original, yet dialed it up with a new look and feel with ease. Its chill, calming vibes should cure what ails you today. That and maybe some greasy food and a lot of water.

[Remix] Dej Loaf – Try Me (Feat. Jeezy & T.I.)

Dej Loaf
Try Me Official Remix ft Jeezy & T.I.

In a year that saw the emergence of internet rap stars like Young Thug, iLoveMakonnen and Bobby Shmurda, Dej Loaf‘s “Try Me” is still one of the more surprising hits we’ve come across. The Detroit native’s marquee single is oddly addicting, though we never imagined it would take off like it did. After getting that chorus glued in our minds for nearly the entire latter half of 2014 though, it’s no mystery why a bevy of emcees have tried their hands at remixing the track. The latest two rappers to step up to the plate are Southern royalty, as Jeezy and T.I. lend their talents to the latest iteration of the tune. Both emcees come correct with their verses, shaping a supreme remix that’s poised to take this hit further up the charts.

[House] George Ezra – Budapest (Jack That House Bootleg)

George Ezra
Budapest (Jack That House Bootleg)

Looking outside through our frost covered windows, we see nothing but frigid, below-zero winds blowing snow across the landscape. Inside though, it’s all sunshine, smiles and dancing, and we have Jack That House to thank for that.

Reworking a song as unique and uplifting as George Ezra’s “Budapest” is no easy feat. Set to the soft strums of guitars, a well-defined bassline, and a playful melody, the high spirited vocals and supporting percussive hums create such a well-defined vibe that it it’s hard to think of this tune any other way. Until today.

Focusing heavily on vocal sampling, which is divinely executed, Jack That House has dialed up a somewhat tropical house interpretation. Its deep melody and bassline and clean, simple percussions accentuate the grin-inducing vocal manipulation on “You”, leaving us with a middle finger pointed out the window. We’ll happily stay inside and dance today.

I’d leave it all

MIA – Paper Planes (Eau Claire Remix) [TMN PREMIERE]

MIA
Paper Planes (Eau Claire Remix)

To end the year on a positive note, here’s a feel-good tune for all the happy souls out there. DC-based Eau Claire has been on a roll with her sophisticated remixes, whether it’s a Stevie Wonder oldie or a Mike Posner Top 40 pop hit, she manages to pick just the right tracks to remix all while showing finesse and character in her music. Reworking MIA‘s one-hit wonder “Paper Planes”, Eau Claire aims to create something that’s both inventive and reminiscent.

It starts off with a series of oriental sounding synth, accompanied by a classic house beat. The original tune is flipped and turned into a fun and loosening dance track. The subtle dissonance before the catchy drop shows the level of complexity and uniqueness of the song. Many would criticize disco music for being dull and repetitive, yet this track says otherwise. It’s definitely not your average banger. While staying true to her music, the talented Eau Claire is set to take on the nu-disco scene by storm. Make sure to follow her for more dope tunes to come!

From Above (67th Hour Remix)

Blackpool-based singer/songwriter Rae Morris has some intensely emotive vocals that perfectly carry the immersive lyrics she crafts, so hearing some golden remixes that follow her works should be consistently expected from now until she hangs up her microphone.

Today we have an unofficial remix from Netherlands native 67th Hour, who has sped up the original piano melody, and coupled it with a smooth bassline. The light rattles and hi-hat hits paired with the echoing synths create a delicate, chill vibe, perfect for getting some work done, or just relaxing at home. Take one listen through. We’re sure you’ll agree that this is one to hold on to.

It was only recently that I first heard the Rae Morris’ music, but after hearing her track called “From Above,” I immediately got inspired to make my own rendition.
