[R&B/Soul] Moon Boots – Keep the Faith (Feat. Nic Hanson)

Things are heating up this summer for rising DJ and producer Moon Boots aka Peter Dougherty. August 4th he’ll be releasing his debut album First Landing on London based label, Anjunadeep, a hotbed for dutifully picked music gold. Recently released is one of 10 tracks on the upcoming LP, and if the remaining nine are anything like this one we’re in for quite a treat come August.

Moon Boots keeps things laid back and groovy with vocals by Nic Hanson while jazzy guitar and a soulful melody binds this track into the ultimate Summer release leaving us anticipating the remaining album. We’re thinking this track best pairs with a coastal highway, top down convertible, and your best road trip crew. Make sure to stream and download “Keep the Faith” here.

[Event Preview/Playlist] The Underground Music Showcase – Denver, CO

The 17th anniversary of one of Denver’s most storied music events, The Underground Music Showcase, is just around the corner. What began as a one-night performance featuring just four bands, The UMS has steadily exploded into to a four-day music and art festival featuring hundreds of performances. As the time draws nearer to what will no doubt be another incredible weekend pf performances, it’s time to get our readers familiar with this year’s crop of (mostly) burgeoning artists spanning a plethora of genres and sounds. While this recent slate of participating artists is the second wave, we can assuredly expect one more run of performers to be added to this year’s bill, so stay tuned!

This year’s bill features one of the more eclectic, varied lineups we’ve been privy to for a number of years, including a seemingly heavier focus on displaying the myriad talent spread across The Centennial State (that’s Colorado ya yokels). On the top end of things, The UMS features an incredible slate of headlining performances from the likes of Nika Roza Danilova’s influential avant-pop project Zola Jesus,  New Orleans based Benjamin Booker‘s raw brand of blues/boogie/soul/rock, Red Fang‘s primal-yet-refined  stoner-metal, John Jagos’ lofi pop alter-ego and TMN darling Brothertiger, and the smoothly subdued vocal stylings of Esmé Patterson. In addition to the already excellent pallet of headliners, The UMS also will be presenting countless sets from some of our absolute favorite Colorado artists including Flaural, Povi, RUMTUM, Slow Caves & Dragondeer. To get your ears tuned for next month’s festivities, check out our preview playlist below and get your learn on if you haven’t already. Tickets are still on presale, so hop to it and pick up a 4-day pass on the cheap here!

[R&B & Soul] Driftwood. – Medusa (ft. Aurora Rose)

Driftwood. ft. Aurora Rose
Medusa

The best hooks take a big idea and mold it down to the simplest form. They can carry specific emotion or instantly inspire you. And the greatest often get a universal reaction. I was thinking about that the other night while playing some music and this song “Medusa” came up. The line, “frequencies between you an me are exchanging” just stuck out and got me thinking. The artist is Driftwood and I recommend checking out the project for yourself. Chill hip-hop and minimalist influences go perfectly with the songwriting and Aurora Rose’s vocal feature. There’s also a music video that fits well, the concept is simple and mysterious but effective. Driftwood is just getting started but this new single is quality and I’m looking forward to hearing what’s next.

[Event Review] Gabriel Garzón-Montano Delivers a Passionate San Francisco Debut

     …

Gabriel Garzón-Montano at The Rickshaw Stop

Saturday May 13, 2017

Following the release of his debut full-length album Jardín (see our review here) in January, it was only a matter of time before Gabriel Garzón-Montano shared his creation with fans in person. After kicking off his tour to start the month of May, Garzón-Montano introduced himself to San Francisco’s music scene at the Rickshaw Stop this past Saturday. The sold-out crowd enjoyed 75 minutes of passionate soul-baring as Gabriel gave the crowd his all.

With the help of drummer David Frazier, Gabriel Garzón-Montano delivered an incredible musical experience in the intimate, hazy ambiance of the Rickshaw Stop. Highlights included GGM’s sensual crooning on “Six-Eight”, and the funky vibes of popular song “Crawl”. He relied heavily upon a participatory audience during the show, one that was very excited to engage in clapping, snapping, and singing along to Gabriel’s call-and-responses. Furthermore attendees were delightfully treated to a bilingual set. After interlacing a song or two in Spanish throughout his repertoire, Gabriel’s encore was nearly entirely in Spanish with the exception of first track “Bombo Fabrika”.

Garzón-Montano took us through a musical journey of his entire discography, and then some. With his masterfully-crafted music and soulful approach to showmanship, we continue to have high expectations for this artist in the future.

Future tour dates can be found here— don’t miss a chance to see Gabriel Garzón-Montano live! Continue reading

[Electronic] Astrocolor – Push Too Hard (feat. Fox Glove)

Astrocolor
Push Too Hard (feat. Fox Glove)

The best music often comes with an elusive sound. A new release by the Canadian band Astrocolor bends rock, soul, electronic and so many other genres into something wonderful. An emotional vocal performance from Fox Glove brings an Erykah Badu influence while the instrumental jams and analogue synth have elements of Tycho or Boards of Canada.  They’re still relatively underground and building up their online presence but Astrocolor’s fresh modern sound points to big things down the line. “Push Too Hard”  is the lead single on a new 7-track album. It’s a solid listen from start to finish so be sure to head over and check out the full album if you like it.

The triumvirate of Atu, Dpat, and Brent Faiyaz have spent the better part of the 2010’s coming into form and finding their signature styles. As some of the more prominent, talented producers in the experimental hip hop / R&B realm, Dpat and Atu both gained a fair amount of recognition among the initiated in 2013. Vocalist Faiyaz made his splash in early 2015, steadily gaining popularity since. Upon signing their allegiances with the Soulection family, both producers released dazzling, emotional projects – both still land favorably on the ever changing bulls-eye of quality music.

Over U

All the tracks we post, we love. Some tracks really stick out though, and one of those we have for you currently. “Over U” by LIOHN is one of those songs that enters your ears and proceeds to take over your entire being. Even if you’re not someone who is going through the hardships the song presents, it still strikes just the right chords.

The vocal performance is as good as it gets and the instrumental alone is enough to be a hit. Together, they work in tandem to bring us one of our favorite songs of 2017. From the start, you’re entranced, and at the end, you just want it all over again. Stream the song today and grab your copy of it through the digital service of your choice.
