[Sultry] Gallant – Open Up

Gallant
Open Up

That moment when you hear a new artist and just melt.

For a lot of you, that opening statement will apply to this relatively brand new artist. After gaining some critical acclaim in 2014, NYC singer/songwriter Gallant (signed to Mind of a Genius, the label behind Grammy nominated ZHU), is back after a full year’s hiatus. His first release on this label is what we’re offering up today.

“Open up” casually grinds against the top 40 world, providing us with something that’s quite fetching and memorable, yet the furthest thing from a hook-centric, pop-structured, radio hit. His voice is definitely primed for the former though, which we we’d like to give a subtle nod in approval for the decision to craft something truly unique. It would have been mindlessly simple to march to the beat of a major label with a voice like that.

Aside from the soaring vocals, rife with a dexterous range and toothy-grin-creating pitch, the instrumentals are the perfect backdrop for “Open Up.” Industrial at times, what with the percussion-style female vocal moans and all, we’re casually pulled in with future bass nuances, yet always left in the RnB world. It’s articulately crafted from start to finish, each sound carefully thought out, analysed and placed perfectly.

[Future R&B] Mar – Not Like Here

Mar
Not Like Here

Riding the momentum of the phenomenal “Her Window” collaboration with Full Crate, Dutch vocalist/producer Mar presented the first single from his upcoming self-titled EP yesterday. Mar kicks off “Not Like Here” with his flawless vocals before a heavy, pulsing percussion breakdown opens up into a hard-hitting bass line. It’s an intricate and varied journey that combines the future movement of electronica with a perfectly honed R&B sensibility. Give this dynamic tune a spin above and see for yourself.

[Chill/Nu-Disco] Falcon Punch – Square One

Falcon Punch
Square One

The last time we had the pleasure of featuring Denver based laid-back dance slinger Falcon Punch was with a lovely contribution to MANI/PEDI Records “Silk”, and it was only shortly thereafter that he set the music blogosphere on fire with “Donald’s Bird”. Today, one of our most looked-to disko tastemakers is back with another tastefully arranged piece of placid dance construction, “Square One”. A funk-fueled, slow groover, “Square One” interweaves every piece of Falcon Punch’s sophisticated production psyche together effortlessly. Bouncing along on an understated and underground favoring deep synth line and a smattering of reverb treated Mo-Town vocal chops, we were easily entranced no less than four bars into his latest movement. But, the real treat for us was discovering the versatile musician’s talents extend far beyond the confines of computer production programs. Almost every inch of “Square One” pulses with painstakingly written and modulated analog instrumentation; from the delicate keys, to serene guitar plucking and swinging bassline, Falcon Punch occupies a tangible music space so few producers dream to delve into. It’s more than inspirative when we learn our favorite dance artists maintain and bridge the fundamental connection between legitimate music players and dancefloor wizards so needless to say, “Square One” has been on repeat around the TMN offices today. It’s high time our Ninja friends join the party, and to do you one better, grab a free download here.

Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 45]

Before we begin, we’d like to give a special shoutout to the guys over at Soulection, who recently surpassed the 200,000 follower mark on SoundCloud. In celebration of that achievement, they decided to release a new compilation titled, Love Is King, which also doubles as a tribute to the one and only Sade. We’ve chosen a few of our favorites to include in the playlist below, but you should definitely check out the full project. Without Soulection, we probably would have no Sunday Night Soul, so we have a lot of respect for what they’ve been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time.

If you were down in Austin for SXSW with some of our other ninjas, chances are you could use a moment to just breathe and relax. What better way to wind down after an insanely hectic week than with a little soul? Although tonight’s edition doesn’t approach the massive scale of last week’s playlist, there’s still plenty of gold to be found in this one. We’ll let you sift through the collection yourself, so please let us know if you have any favorites! Also, make sure to follow us on SoundCloud, where you can find all of our playlists after they’ve been published.

[NEW] Jhené Aiko – Living Room Flow

Jhene Aiko
living room flow

Feeling a little generous this afternoon, Jhené Aiko has dropped off a soulful little gem for all her fans. “Living Room Flow” is typical bedroom fare (even if the locale has been shifted), and has all the elements of a successful baby-maker: it’s sexy, slow-moving and puts the mind at ease. It’s a neat little loosie, from the wonderful songstress, and serves as a nice reminder of what she can bring to the table. We have no idea whether this is attached to any projects, but we’re hoping it’s a sign of something to come. Either way, stream the tune above and check back here for more information on any future mixtapes or albums.
