[Chill] Above & Beyond – Sun & Moon (Deuxième Revisit)

Above & Beyond
Sun & Moon (Deuxième Revisit)

We use the term “chill” on TMN to describe everything from dubstep to Norah Jones covers. What we have for you today can be found elsewhere throughout the blogosphere as well as next to the definition of “chill” in your 2015 Merriam-Webster dictionary. I challenge you to have pants on by the time this tune ends, by your doing or someone else’s. “Sun & Moon” has been remixed and covered and mashed up to death in the electronic music world but nobody ever mentioned anything about jazz. Enter Deuxième aka the two most creative cats to come out of Connecticut in a minute aka the offspring of Duke Silver and Kenny G. Their spin on this is romantic, if not ethereal, and we are at a loss of words to truly put in words the type of way this has us feeling. Enjoy Ninjas and Ninjettes.

[Indie/Soul] Janelle Kroll – Sunny Days

Janelle Kroll
Sunny Days

Let’s face it – this is the perfect song to dedicate to the cold weather.

While we know this tune had a more serious message than what was stated above, we couldn’t help ourselves. Jokes aside, if you’re not familiar with budding, young artist Janelle Kroll, now is a great time to get familiar, as she just delivered this enchanting new original, “Sunny Days.”

This up-and-coming singer from New York City has previously proved her talents on tracks with some of dance music’s finest (Dennis Ferrer and Codes) but now she’s adding to her catalog with yet another tune to call her own. On “Sunny Days,” Janelle uses her stunning voice as her paint brush, as she artfully tells a story of being consistently brought down, on a canvas of a chilled-out, downtempo beat with various melodic accents.

Have a listen to the outstanding song, and keep tabs on Janelle as she continues on her rise in music.

[Laid Back] HIRA KING – Run

HIRA KING.
Run

Aw snap, ninjas. We’re not sure about your part of the country, but here in Denver, it’s bright and sunny. The only thing that’s making the shimmery sunlight and vibrant blue skies better is this quirky, laid back tune from HIRA KING.

Fresh, bouncy & wholeheartedly soulful is a great way to describe this debut track. “Run” is definitely a 1 minute 50 second cheer from ear to ear. Running marketing in the mysterious fashion on this occasion means there’s little else to pick-out past the computer graphic artwork, which adds to the playful approach to the music.

We’ll anxiously await with bated breath for a debut EP sometime this year. Please…let it be sooner, rather than later.

[Smooth] ToolBox & Miki Rose – U&I

ToolBox & Miki Rose
U&I (Valentine's Day Free Download)

Miki Rose is slotted for a debut solo EP later this year with Darker Than Wax, and while we wait it out, she decided to team up with ToolBox for a sensuous number titled “U&I.” This Valentine’s treat hits all the right spots with the sultry vocals of Miki and the tightened down but soulful production of ToolBox. It may be a few days past Valentine’s, but this is a late night jam that’s sure to find its place on your chill/sexy playlists. If there ever was a time for slow jams to flourish, it’s now, and the combination of Miki and ToolBox is one that needs to occur again and soon. Big thanks to MOOVMNT on the premiere and be sure to grab the free download.

Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 40]

Want to know what SNL and SNS have in common? If you think the answer is the first two letters in our abbreviations or the fact that both include the word “Night” you wouldn’t technically be wrong, but you are pretty far off. The real answer is the number 40. While Saturday Night Live is celebrating their 40th anniversary tonight, we happen to be celebrating our 40th edition of Sunday Night Soul. Ok, it’s not quite the same thing, but just let us have this, alright? All jokes aside, we’re ecstatic that you’ve stuck with us for this long, letting us end off your weekends the proper way with some good ol’ soul. Technically, we should have reached this milestone much earlier, but we’ll ignore that for the moment.

We hope you guys were able to put the last week’s edition of our playlist to good use last night. Since yesterday was Valentine’s Day though, that means many of the songs in this week’s collection were inspired by Cupid himself. [Hip-Hop/Soul] Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment – Lady Friend

Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment
Lady Friend

We were expecting a few surprises this Valentine’s Day, but we could not have seen this one coming. In honor of the romantic holiday, Chance The Rapper has released a special dedication to his “Lady Friend.” Backed by live instrumentation from his band The Social Experiment, Chances spends a majority of the tune crooning about a special someone who doesn’t seem to be a girlfriend, but is most certainly a lady and a friend. The jazzy number features additional vocals from two very talented females in Kiara Lanier and Kehlani. “Lady Friend” is an incredibly sweet tune, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face. There’s no clue yet as to if this will be featured on Surf, but we appreciate the new material nonetheless. Stream the track above, and click the download button to snag a copy for your special “Lady Friend.”

[R&B] Xavier – Natural E

Xavier
Natural E

Given that today is Valentine’s Day, “Natural E” you’d expect to come across a romantic ballad or two (I have way too much fun with puns sometimes). However, this valiant effort stands out from the pack because it comes from Xavier, a mysterious crooner that we’ve had our eyes on since we first discovered his debut single “Now” early last year. Though we still haven’t learned much about him in that time, we can now safely inform you that the man who shares his namesake with the wheelchair-bound leader of the X-Men is no one-hit wonder.

While his previous two releases–the aforementioned “Now” and “The Hollow“–seemed to follow the moody and provocative example of The Weeknd, this tune seems far more stripped down and sentimental. It’s in its simplicity where it succeeds, however. Xavier’s vibrant vocals provide substance to a delicate, airy instrumental provided by ODNY. The track itself is all about forgoing the use of any drugs, and receiving a natural high through certain other *ahem* methods. As we mentioned before, with this being only his third track to date, “Natural E” fits well into Xavier’s established catalog. Stream the track above, and make sure to show your support by purchasing  a copy as well. You won’t regret it later tonight when the moment’s just right.
