After experiencing one of the best movies ever created, Inglorious Bastards, it was obvious that another Tarantino revenge story would provide just as much pleasure. Django, a love story that wraps around themes of revenge and justice was accompanied by one of the most modern soundtracks in the last couple of years. However, the main Django theme song is not so recent, originally composed in 1966 by Luis Bacalov. Spanish producer Guts, took the already excellent original and made a slow, easily digesting chill rendition.

[Hip-Hop] 2Pac and James Brown – Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable)
No, your eyes are not deceiving you. That title does say James Brown and 2Pac. The two musical legends have collaborated from beyond the grave, creating the title track for the Django Unchained soundtrack. This work is the product of Tupac’s engineer Claudio Cueni, who was able to render a stellar mashup between Brown’s “The Payback” and Shakur’s “Untouchable.” I’m usually not a fan of music created posthumously, and think it’s probably time to stop milking Pac for all his legacy’s worth. However, it’s easy to see that this one is more than your average cut and paste job, and shines ahead of most tracks of its kind.
[R&B/Soul] John Legend – Who Did That To You
2012 seems to be a good year for soundtracks, with Quentin Tarantino’s latest picture, Django Unchained, now adding a few solid contenders over the past few weeks. The latest single, featuring the always excellent John Legend, seems to be a departure from his traditional style of music, but that isn’t to say he doesn’t fit right in with the track’s atmosphere. Indeed, Legend’s soulful vocal are the perfect choice for this Western theme, as he’s able to accurately convey the sense of determination and malice running through the hero’s mind. If you like this new anthem, make sure to look for it again when you watch the film on the big screen on Christmas Day, with the soundtrack dropping a week earlier on the 18th.
[Hip-Hop] Rick Ross – 100 Black Coffins
Lending his voice to the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film, Django Unchained, the MMG emcee Rick Ross drops some new heat titled “100 Black Coffins” off the soundtrack. The Jamie Foxx produced single is a Rozay narrated track describing the dark tale of the western movie about the slave turned bounty hunter. With a strong western vibe and strong verses from the Maybach lyricist, this is a dope release and a side from the always flossin’ rapper. Be sure to check it below and hear more from John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, and collaborations from the late James Brown and Tupac Shakur on the Django Unchained soundtrack dropping 12/18.
Kanye West – White Dress (Alternate Version)
After the successful released Tarantino and RZA film Man with the Iron Fist and acclaimed soundtrack, the GOOD Music emcee Kanye West releases an extended, alternate version to the movie’s single “White Dress”. This romantic RZA and Tru of the Wu-Tang affiliated soul group Stone Mecca doesn’t stray too far from the original version but offers a polished, more soulful vibe without taking away from Kanye’s well delivered bars. Similar to Ghostface‘s “Wildflower” or “Icecream”, this track offers a nostalgic feel coupled with a beautiful piano line, chill drum chords, and jazzy guitar rip towards the end.
[Indie] Alt-J feat. Mountain Man – Buffalo
The indie-pop foursome Alt-J took the world by storm with their September debut, An Awesome Wave, which recently snagged the esteemed Mercury Prize. For all curious but haven’t yet tried it: if you press alt-J on your keyboard it makes the Greek symbol for change. That’s what the name means. ∆ join Mountain Man (three Vermont folk singers who previously backed Feist) in this track set to appear on the soundtrack of the upcoming film Silver Lining Playbook. It’s the synthetic, syncopated beats we love from Alt-J, combined with thicker (and higher) vocal harmonies from their collaborating female voices. They mix in some playful brass, major-minor switchbacks, and witty wordplay around the track’s title.
Hear Alt-J’s cinematic debut and check out Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence on the big screen November 21st.

[NEW] Passion Pit – Where I Come From (Breaking Dawn Part 2 Soundtrack)
In the past, the Twilight franchise has managed to round up quality talent for their soundtracks. The latest installment, Breaking Dawn Part 2, is no different. Yesterday, we brought you Ellie Goulding’s “Bittersweet” track produced by Skrillex, and today, we present Passion Pit‘s contribution. Titled “Where I Come From,” it’s a light, mild-mannered synth pop song; maybe not as bouncy and in-your-face as you’d expect, but the restraint and softness are surprisingly pleasant and produce good vibes of their own.
