[Multi-Genre] Adam Tell – Purpose EP

I don’t think there’s much to do in Iowa, which probably helped Adam Tell become such a good musician. His newest project, the Purpose EP, exemplify his skills in depth with four records that Cloudhead Records couldn’t pass up. Adam’s statement on Soundcloud states, “The music speaks for itself,” and it certainly does. It’s that good.

Adam gives us a taste of some synth pop and some complex electro-style tracks that will have lovers of 8-bit going crazy. He doesn’t go overboard with sounding too much like video game music, instead he takes just enough influence from there, along with several other places to create something unique. Adam also sings on the records, giving himself another avenue of expression and giving himself the opportunity to say that he created the Purpose EP all on his own. The first two records on the project fit the more poppy style that Adam was going for, while the next to get more deep into the dance music, capping things off with “A Taste of Purpose” which is our favorite song of the EP. Check it out below, and make sure to head over to iTunes to buy the tracks.

The Old Adage – Brother [TMN Premiere]

The Old Adage
Brother

This April, Detroit’s The Old Adage will be releasing their LP. Today, we’re lucky enough to share with you one of the singles from the album early as a Music Ninja Premiere. “Brother” is what we have to share, their humble record tinged with nostalgic emotions. The duo really knocked this one out of the park, which is why we had to jump on this one and give you listeners an exclusive full preview.

“Brother” is a soft synth pop record whose sound is feels more organic than electronic. The instrumental is phenomenal, but for us the main highlight of the track is the superb vocal performance from Mimi, with Nino providing background vocals that create the perfect tone; not only with regard to the sonic quality, but also with the lyrical content. If you haven’t reminisced about the past in a while, you’re sure to with someone close to you soon after taking a listen to “Brother.” Give it a stream, and get ready for the duo’s album release coming this April.

[Future] voia – almost human

voia
almost human

One project that we are patiently waiting for is voia‘s LP, futuresong. This New York talent is the full package, producer, vocalist, and all around great dude. He recently came out with “almost human,” the second single off his upcoming album. Attack The Music released this one as an optional free download, or a buy if you’re feeling generous. Once you hear the incredible future pop style, you’re gonna want to give some fiscal props to voia.

“almost human” starts right off with an ear-catching melody that leads into the verse, which voia provides the vocals for. It sort of reminds me a little bit of Owl City, expect voia is 100x cooler and brings on a more future/dance friendly vibe. Throughout the song there will be moments where you get that feeling of frisson, where the feel-good sensations take over and the goose bumps arise. With this and “eeelixir!,” we are at the edge of our seats waiting for this LP to drop. In the meantime, we have two records from it to hold us over.

[Synth-Rock/Indie] Operators – Cold Light

Operators
Cold Light

It’s no great secret that sadly, here in 2016, the music blog world has devolved into an endless stream of click-baitey ‘news’ articles and an aggressive pissing contest of sorts between similar publications of who can post something first. So, not to be TMN’s resident grumpy music nostalgist or anything, but whenever tunes are missed on a writer’s initial radar and surface some weeks down the road, there has been an unsatisfying feeling lingering in many writers’ souls in that they “missed the boat” and no longer feel compelled to post said song as it may effect their ‘credibility’; even though they may in fact be completely infatuated with a song or album, thus quelching an opportunity of a share from someone who genuinely enjoys it. Which is a silly thing to think about anyhow, as many of us started primarily as enthusiastic music lovers who only ever covered the music we loved, and not the music that comes with the largest PR & publicity push. Phewww….

Basically, after the long winded and caffeinated semi-rant, what this writer is trying to say is that: “I’ve fallen madly in love with a band and tune which dropped a month ago; but I just have to share it with whomever will listen via my tiny, web-based soap box!” The tune and band here in questions is “Cold Light”, from former Divine Fits and Wolf Parade member Dan Boeckner’s latest project Operators. “Cold Light” plays like a breezy, early New Order single, but in place of Bernard Sumner’s tender refrain lie the passionate howls that have become Boeckner’s trademark over the years. Just captivating stuff to this writer’s ears really. Operators, which features Boeckner’s former Divine Fits bandmate Sam Brown on drums and Devojka on keys, recruited Holy Fuck’s Graham Walsh (who also holds chief production credits on records for Viet Cong & Alvvays) as their chief sound engineer, and we think the results alreadyspeak for themselves. “Cold Light” marks Operators’ debut single from debut long-player Blue Light, due out 4/1 on Canadian imprint Last Gang Records (pre-order here), so until then, get your kicks by either catching them live on one of the many tour dates listed below, or by streaming Operators’ impressive lead single above.

[Synth-pop] Astronomyy – The Secret

Astronomyy
The Secret

Following the success of “Don’t Need U” and “Nothing On My Mind”, 26-year-old Astronomyy is back with another giant hit. Titled “The Secret”, this synth-pop tune is set to be one of his biggest tracks to date. A catchy retro bassline immediately grabs our attention, while his vocals outline an infectious melody. The song tells a story of the feeling you get when your loved one has chosen someone else over you, and the contemplation of your competition. It’s one of those tunes that will get stuck in your head for a long time because of how personal it speaks to you.

One of our favorite British singer/producers is starting off 2016 strong with this release. Definitely keep an eye out for Astronomyy in the near future for more special tunes.
