[Alternative/Rock] Youth Lagoon – I’ve Seen

Youth Lagoon
I've Seen

Trevor Powers, aka Youth Lagoon, has been an indie favorite of ours since his first release Year of Hibernation back in 2011. Mastering the DIY, low-fi electronic ballad game, Powers created a work of art then that has gone down as an instant vinyl classic for the modern music generation. Following that up with his next release Wondrous Bughouse in 2013, Youth Lagoon showed us that he had some pretty complex composition skills under his belt and delivered an album that was full of playfully eclectic beats, sounds and vocals. Now in 2015, Powers has begun releasing another set of songs that could fall into their own genre entirely, the newest one being his single “I’ve Seen.”

Playing with elements of acoustic guitar and theatrical keys we hear a change in the rhythm sections that used to be dominated by distorted strings. Powers’s’ voice falls in and out of the track which is a dynamic that we’re very appreciative of because it gives us more time to listen to the instrumental mix of dry and wet strings and synths combos. This pulls Powers’s work up and into a new kind of experimental music for him. With these new sounds and his natural affinity for the piano, the track has started to take on something that resembles an early Radiohead, and here at TMN, that’s a pretty big deal. And we heard he’s on tour with Taylor McFerrin, who is also great. Catch that show if you can.

CAFUNÉ – Love Songs For Other People [TMN Premiere]

Pop music is a fickle thing. As we know, it veers toward being mostly accessible, but luckily we still have the perimeter acts that shed typical traits while still, interestingly enough, operating within certain structural norms. Here is where CAFUNÉ reigns supreme. This duo, comprised of Noyu and Sedona, has revamped the likes of Porter Robinson, Daft Punk, and, most recently, Drake in their pristine and practiced style of alternative pop that has carried over into a noteworthy debut EP, Love Songs For Other People. We are beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to premiere this project for you, so let’s go ahead and dive in!

Lay Low & Lay Low (Reprise) – The double dose of the “Lay Low” tunes are the bookends of the EP, but they work together with a purpose. As the intro synths trickle in, they crescendo into an electrifying concentration of their signature sound tinged with video game synths and confident lyrics delivered by Sedona, the duo’s primary vocalist. The tone is instantly cheery and encouraging as the intro builds, but the reprise shifts back down to a calmer demeanor for a short moment before one last buoyant chorus bids us farewell.

Warm Body – This single, previously premiered by Smoothie Tunes, is simply fun. You can’t beat the unbridled optimism and catchiness of a tune like “Warm Body,” and it absolutely stands out as a shining moment in Love Songs For Other People. Having the privilege of good pop music doesn’t come around every day, and a song like this is a prime example of what the genre as a whole can accomplish.

Fall Asleep Slow – “Fall Asleep Slow” is another track that preceded the EP release, and its guitar-driven focus paves the way for distorted and bit crushed vocals that coalesce into a clear-cut creation dealing with the need for an escape. Considering all of the recent events that have transpired, we certainly could use one at some point. So far, this EP provides exactly that.

Runaways – If the previous song was the call for a new start, “Runaways” is the action itself. Aptly named, this song hearkens back to “Lay Low” with playful and chippy synths that flutter around the buzzing chorus and dance around the lyrics that detail a journey of pushing past a former love. Have we all been there? Absolutely. We just really enjoy the method that these two take in expressing this common sentiment.

CAFUNÉ is a band that exudes a deserving amount of confidence and aptitude on a remarkable debut. Love Songs For Other People was created with thousands of miles between the duo for some time, but their separate experiences molded together to forge something spectacular and infectious that proves no boundaries or limitations will deter them. It’s a project that gives you hope. It brightens your day the instant you scroll past it in your feed and hit play. It’s a combination of alternative and pop music that makes you smile. Hold on to that feeling and you’ll enjoy every second of CAFUNÉ’s prominent debut.

[Deep-House/Future] Cosmo’s Midnight – Walk With Me ft. Kučka (KOA Remix)

Cosmo's Midnight
Walk With Me ft. Kučka (KOA Remix)

Let’s face it, for a lot of you ninjas out there, Fridays are designed for dancing out whatever stresses may have built up over the week at work or school. So, it is indubitably our duty to help supply the perfect tracks to help shift out of your Mr. Anderson persona and into your inner Neo (if you don’t understand The Matrix reference, I’m getting too old).

Pacing off today’ selection is just a gorgeously tuned, gliding slice of club-house from mysterious Sydney based production collective KOA. With only one tune released under the KOA moniker thus far; an original record, “All of My Love”, which was featured on the excellent label sampler Teen Idols: A Future Classic Compilation, the enigmatic troupe make their first foray into the world of remixes with a lushly crafted and understated house-y take on Cosmo’s Midnight single “Walk With Me”. On their revision of “Walk With Me”, KOA delightfully represents their take on that globe-sweeping Australian indie-dance sound made so popular by the same imprint championing them, Future Classic, through a groove-first synth line and the subtle sweeping roll of deep sub bass. Which, set against those flitty vocal chops, plays like the perfect pairing. We can’t get enough of this one today, so start loosening up and get into the Friday spirit with KOA’s “Walk With Me” remix above.

[Nu-Disco/Synth-Pop] Tundran – Kimono [TMN Premiere]

Tundran
Kimono

It’s pretty safe to say that whenever independent dance label PRMD Music signs an artist, they’ll be pretty special. Of course with their track record of being home to the likes of Avicii, Cazzette and iSHi, as well as the recently established sub-label ICONS, it’s clear to see why we’ve put so much stock in them. While much of their roster operate within the larger sounds of dance music, their newest act, Tundran, falls into an entirely different mold. Tundran is the indie-dance, disco and pop infused musical pairing of fellow Swedes Felix & Jakob who have professed their sound “…as a stepson of Fleetwood Mac, or maybe that weird cousin to the early Daft Punk… Definitely related to Earth, Wind and Fire too.”  With a sonic aesthetic so tightly wound and only one single (which caught on like wild-fire) released under the Tundran moniker, the duo’s musical prowess plays lightyears beyond what their modest catalog would suggest. Tundran’s latest release “Kimono” is yet another polished piece of their expanding production puzzle, blending delicate vocals with warm and nostalgic instrumentation that already has us conjuring up comparisons to the subdued reverby shades of Day Wave with the kind of technical indie precision of Holy Ghost! “Kimono” is a consummate example of pop structuring; rolling itself out upon a delicate backdrop of airy pads before rolling guitar licks and a simplistically sticky kick-clap drumline opens up the perfect amount of room for those airy vocals to permeate and round out the entire movement.

We’ll surely be keeping our eyes, and ears for that matter, towards Tundran as we wind down 2015, and we have a strong bet that 2016 will be a year with the name ‘Tundran’ emanating from countless music critics’ tongues. Enjoy “Kimono” above as a shiny new ‘TMN Premiere’ and try not to get lost in a hazy sea of electronic-indie-pop bliss. Forgive us while we swoon for a moment.

Hi-Fi Cali – Soulmates [TMN PREMIERE]

Hi Fi Cali
Soulmates

TMN is stoked to give you all a first look at electropop duo Hi-Fi Cali’s latest single, “Soulmates.” A direct off-shoot of Chris Bartel’s previous project Bora York, the Minneapolis duo brings us a smooth, downtempo disco track with this release that’ll get you snaking your head to a synth-driven rhythm, funky guitar riff, and finessed bass. After all that action, about half way through the song you’ll get a treat of some ambient butterfly effect tones that’ll take you up and away.

While the highly pleasing falsetto vocals on this track are a close second, our favorite thing about this tune has got to be the way that Hi-Fi Cali creates a perfect symphony of retro synths throughout, all building upon one another with patience and purpose.

This tune is absolutely perfect for fans of electropop favorites Chromeo, Bag Raiders, Holy Ghost!, and even Toro y Moi. Let’s hope their hot sound can get them through those cold winters in Minnesota. Don’t freeze please—we want to hear more.

Brothertiger
Beyond The Infinite + Denver Ticket Giveaway!

It’s no secret around the TMN squad that Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter and producer John Jagos and his Brothertiger project have captured a large piece of our hearts over the years. For the past few months, Brothertiger has been dropping a smattering of excellent singles in the lead-up to his third full-length LP, Out of Touch, and to accompany that impending album, the Brothertiger team is smack in the middle of a North American tour. Needless to say, our needle is red-lining with anticipation as this Friday we’ve teamed up with our friends at Lost Lake Lounge and Radio 1190 to present this Friday’s tour stop in beautiful Denver, CO. For fans of any corner of alt, pop and everything between, Brothertiger should without a doubt be one of your go-to acts for consistent production prowess. Brothertiger’s carefully thought-out, art-house R&B disguised in reverb-heavy pop structuring has long since become one of our favorite musical aesthetics in recent memory, and we’re absolutely ecstatic to have him headlining one of our favorite intimate venues in the Mile High City. Rounding out the bill is Denver’s Sunboy, representing one of our favorite independent creative collectives, Moon Magnet Studios. Sunboy’s unparalleled sound blends heavy electronics, delicate analog instrumentation, and intoxicating vocals that sound somewhere between Kevin Barnes and Soft Bulletin era Wayne Coyne; and after getting to catch the four-piece’s recent supporting slot for Gardens & Villa, they’ve quickly become filed under our ‘artists to watch’ tab for 2016. Make sure to get there early for this one Ninjas!

[Electronic] Imad Royal – Troubles

Imad Royal
Troubles

With a recent signing to Nice Life, Imad Royal, formerly known as Royal, knows exactly what he wants to accomplish. “Troubles” is the second original that followed up his impressive Cycles project from the beginning of this year, and the tune bolsters his trademark mesh of pop and electronic into a short, but sweet package. Stuttering and strong synths sliver beside his massive drum work, which you may notice is similar to his side project with SoySauce, and his foray in utilizing his own vocals has become one of the most prominent features of his releases. Imad Royal continues to intrigue, and his journey with Nice Life is set to be exceptional.

His sights are set on the future, his loyalty goes unquestioned, and he prides himself on his friends and the accomplishments they’ve managed to capitalize on together in his lyrics on “Troubles.” It makes a lot of sense, as he has worked with quite a few auspicious artists up to this point in his career, and has even been involved in producing a Panic! At The Disco song. Needless to say, 2015 has been Imad Royal’s year, and “Troubles” gives us a thrilling glimpse into this new chapter that he’s opening up.
