[Podcast] Music Ninja Radio – Episode 46 (Recap)

Music Ninja Radio
Episode 46

Music Ninja Radio is a weekly podcast broadcast live on San Francisco’s BFF.fm — Best Frequencies Forever. You can tune in here every Friday from 4-6PM PT / 7-9ET.

Last Friday’s show marks the one year anniversary since we took our talents to the airwaves of BFF in San Francisco’s best kept secret(alley). From deep in the Mission District, through the port of a pirate ship, we’ve been bringing the best of the best to your ears – Best Frequencies Forever wasn’t voted ‘Best Radio Station‘ in the Bay Area for nothing!

With that in mind, now seems as good a time as any to start providing our fellow Ninja readers with a weekly recap of our show, Music Ninja Radio aka Dojo by the Bay. Curating the best releases each week, themed shows coinciding with specific artist releases, and a fair amount of throwbacks sprinkled throughout, Music Ninja Radio has something for everyone.

The full show’s playlist can be found on the website’s archive here.

Rell The Soundbender – Palante EP [TMN Premiere]

Rell The Soundbender is one of Panama City’s most talented musical exports. Eduardo Morell III, has pushed his music through avenues like OWSLA, SMOG and NEST, and has collaborated with the likes of Far East Movement and Bro Safari. Now, he’s here with his Palante EP and he’s brought it to the dojo for a first listen.

The Palante EP is made up of four tracks with collaborations from Los Rakas, JVZEL, and Harley Mac and Far East Movement. Rell starts things off with “Criminal,” a future house style record that gets things started with a bang. It’s got the energy and attitude to get any party started. With the second song, “Pesao” the sound is switched up to a more trappy vibe that pulls from the producer’s origins in hip-hop. Next comes “Siempre” a song you will likely be playing, well, always. It’s a catchy house jam that is a perfect match for club DJs. Lastly, “Jamma” hits hard with its vibrant, festival ready demeanor. “Jamma” will put a lot of mainstage producer’s works to shame.

Rell The Soundbender did an incredible job with this project, which has been released through Afrercluv. Stream it first here, save it on Spotify, or if you are into buying digital copies, then head over to iTunes.

Unified Highway – My Only (Liquid Stranger Remix) [TMN Premiere]

Unified Highway
My Only (Liquid Stranger Remix)

One of bass music’s heavy hitting veterans is coming forth with an official remix for Unified Highway. Liquid Stranger entered the dojo for the premiere of the official flip of “My Only.” The hybrid head dished out another tune that DJs and fans will be playing out everywhere.

The soulful reggae original was taken by the Scottsdale producer and turned into a hybrid trapstyle hit. The timing of this track couldn’t be more perfect, as EDC is here and its sound couldn’t be more appropriate for the gigantic festival. The newly formed “My Only” has the perfect amount of bass and swagger, emanating the groovy ebb & flow that makes these type of records so enjoyable. When dance meets hip-hop, it’s a beautiful thing, but this remix is so much more than that. Take a listen for yourself, and know that you’re hearing it first in the dojo!

Hi Fi Cali – Ocean Love [TMN PREMIERE]

Hi Fi Cali
Ocean Love

Hi Fi Cali sprung up as an unintentional side project between two of the members of Bora York. A few unpublished synth-pop tunes later, they began catching people ears, and it encouraged them to continue creating together. With a name like Hi Fi Cali, it’s tough to imagine anything but sun-drenched, pleasant tunes that wistfully waft around in the warm summer. Well, the heat is here, and “Ocean Love” fits that bill with prime material to make the best out of the sunny days ahead.

Inherently carefree and optimistic, this song exhibits the best traits of what synth-driven pop can accomplish, because a lot of it can get lost in 8-bit, 80’s nostalgia. These two pull in just the right amount of pop and alternative elements to eschew the typical styles of this genre. “Ocean Love” is absolutely a pleasant listen. It makes you feel great. We can always use a little more of that.

Champagne Drip – Open Your Eyes [TMN VIDEO PREMIERE]

We’re huge fans of Champagne Drip here at The Music Ninja, and getting the chance to premiere something new from this fun producer is always a treat. We’ve got the visuals for his stellar track, “Open Your Eyes”, and they are CRAZY. Created through Hyperspektiv, this video distorts reality into a clash of colors, noise, and sporadic effects that warp perfectly in time with the music. Champagne Drip’s sound fits right in with this trippy type of video production, giving “Open Your Eyes” the full experience of melding song with sight. Interestingly enough, Justin Boreta, who you may know as a third of The Glitch Mob, is a developer for Hyperspektiv. He exclaims,

The goal with Hyperspektiv is to make digital video art easy and accessible. We wanted to make a powerful tool that professionals would want to use, but it’s also easy enough for someone who isn’t tech savvy to enjoy using it. The idea is to have the app itself get out of the way and to dive straight into real-time creativity.

It’s a wild concept all around, so don’t be surprised if you see it pop up more and more. If you’re really feeling this tune, give the Conrank and Kid Froopy remixes a spin also! Be sure to support Champagne Drip on SoundCloud, Facebook, and Twitter. Check out the video below and enjoy!

Modern Machines – Breathe feat. 8 Graves [TMN Premiere]

Modern Machines
Breathe(feat. 8 Graves)

Modern Machines has long been one of our favorite house acts on the market. He has established a progressive sound that fans know and love, but now, Modern Machines has taken a bit of a different route with a new track. “Breathe” featuring 8 Graves is the latest work from the New York producer, and we had the opportunity to premiere it to you.

Modern Machines has dipped out of his zone before with a remix for “Lean On,” but with “Breathe” we still get remnants of his signature progressive style. With this original we get a more pop-based record that has no builds, no drops; it needs nothing of the sort to get your attention and keep you engaged fully in the song. It’s one of the more unique tracks that has come from an up and coming dance producer this festival season, which is why the track is already set to get some love tonight on Sirius XM Beta BPM. Because of this premiere, Modern Machines has decided to give “Breathe” away for free for the next 24 hours, so make sure to head here to get your copy now.
