’Godlands – Hit Em Like This’
Australia has a lot to offer the music world. It’s steeped with talent, but not all that talent is as recognized as should be. Enter Godlands, one of the Australia’s finest gems that you’ll soon come to hear talked about by an exponentially increasing number of people. Coming from Adelaide, Godlands is starting to make moves with her fiercely seductive sound.
If you’re looking to start a party, then Godlands is the go-to, but don’t expect her to tuck herself in comfortably in a creative box. Her dynamic approach to music has captivated audiences across the world, but she’s only just begun. We were lucky enough to have Godlands in the dojo for a chat about what got her to this point in music today and what we can expect for 2018. Lastly, we have some fun with a few hypothetical situations to end the interview.
If you haven’t checked out music from Godlands, then hurry up and click that play button to hear her latest trap single “Hit Em Like This.” Later on we’ve got you covered with her debut single as well entitled “Finally.” She’s only got these two out, but we promise more will come!
TMN: Let’s go back in time – growing up, what kind of music did you listen to?
G: Omg so muuuuch. I grew up listening to Beach boys, Electric Light Orchestra, even a bit of System of a Down then obviously did the jump to 90s/early 00’s pop as one does – you know your Britney Spears, Spice girls, Blue, Five etc etc. Then heaps of Hip Hop and RnB especially Chris Brown, I was like a mega fan of Chris Brown. It wasn’t until I was in high school I started listening to electronic music – The Bloody Beetroots being a fav of mine.
TMN: What got you into creating music originally?
G: I felt super confident with my DJing and knew it could only take me so far so I wanted to branch out and get into production.
TMN: You’ve got a striking name, how did you come up with Godlands?
It was honestly the hardest name to come up with, such an effort and stressful thing, coming up with an artist name these days haha. Nowadays everyone has every name under the sun when it comes to social handles. I really wanted Badlands but I couldn’t ensure I’d be okay with trademarking and there were older bands that had that name so I decided to go with Godlands because it was available haha.
TMN: Did it take time for you to come into your current sound, or was your signature always there?
G: The problem I have is that I like so many different sounds and I want to use all of them. But it just ends up sounding whack so tbh I think I’m still trying to find my sound. But also not. Like I don’t want to put that sort of pressure on me, if some days I feel like making something cute I will – other days it’ll be rough as guts. It depends how I feel.
TMN: How would you describe your music in three words?
G: What. Is. This.
TMN: If you could collaborate with three producers and three vocalists for a project, who would they be?
WhatSoNot, KRANE aaaaand SZA.
TMN: What can we look forward to from Godlands?
G: I’m currently trying to get my life together and deciding on which WIP I need to finish first, GUYS PRESSURE. Lets just say I have things cooking.
TMN: Let’s shake things up – you’re being banished to an island and get to bring one item and fill a fanny pack, what do you bring?
I feel as if I want to be at least a little mature in this and bring a swag because I’m way too lazy and incapable to make my own shelter. As for the fanny pack, I’ll definitely need a packet of M&M’s, a toothbrush & paste because I can’t stand my teeth being furry and a knife.
TMN: Nuclear Fallout is taking place. You get to bring a +1 into the Vault to stay safe, who do you bring?
G: I would have to bring my gf Naomi because she would legit break up with me if I didn’t.
TMN: Lastly, Australia’s government dissipates and you’re elected Queen of Australia, what’s the first law you put into place?
Gay Marriage to be legalised for sure, that’s all I’d really care about tbh lol. Oh and to rescue and help the people on Manus Island. That shit’s whack. We’ve all got to start caring about people more.
