Today might be April Fool’s Day, but this debut mixtape from GoldLink is no joke. After building a steady following through a handful of releases over the last few months, the Virginia native has finally provided us with the full project we’ve all been waiting for.
Operating under the realm of “Future Bounce,” GoldLink brings with him a sound that’s truly unique and ultimately refreshing. Powered by production from Louie Lastic, Fingalick, Lakim, Teklun, JFK, Jaylen! and McCallaman, the 9 track EP finds the rapper spitting over euphoric beats packed with just enough punch to keep tempo with his rabid delivery. While it’s true that GoldLink attacks every song with a zealous, frenetic flow that almost makes it seem like he’s ready to spin out of control, he still possesses a poise that assures you that he has everything under control–a trait rarely seen in artists on their first project. We’ve already mentioned comparisons to Chance The Rapper, Danny Brown and Kendrick Lamar before, but we now also see shades of the past with influences from A Tribe Called Quest and OutKast.
We’d have to say “Planet Paradise,” “Bedtime Story,” “Fuck Being Polite” and “How It’s Done” are our early favorites, but contrary to our usual format, we’ve decided to include the full mixtape stream below, because we believe this is a project that needs to be heard by all fans of hip-hop. If all goes according to plan, GoldLink will be a household name before you know it, and “Future Bounce” will become a far more regular term in our music vernacular.
