To say that we were excited for Mayer Hawthorne would be an understatement. We’ve been grooving to his 60’s and 70’s infused soul pop for quite some time. In fact, “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out,” and “The Walk” have become a few of our personal favorites. We know that he’s quite the charismatic performer just based on what we’ve seen and read, but we didn’t know quite what we were going to get ourselves into.
Here’s a few things you should know about a Mayer Hawthorne concert, just in case you’re thinking of going. And when we say, “thinking of going,” we mean you totally should go because it’s nothing short of fantastic.
– The crowd is going to be a little strange. You may find yourself next to hipster music nerds (such as myself and my friend), groups of 50 something women fawning over Mayer’s every word, or older couples that are reliving your youth. Regardless of which, it’s a friendly crowd, and one that’s enjoyable to be around.
– You may know that Mayer Hawthorne originally recorded this sound just goofing around. This is true, but don’t take that into account. He takes his music incredibly seriously, and his live show will prove that beyond a reasonable doubt.
– Mayer takes a picture in a lounge chair at every show, and then posts it on his facebook. Make sure to like his page and tag yourself after the show.
The stage set up, the band, Mayer’s outfit, and the overall vibe for the night is 100% on point with how you feel a soul show from that era would be like. It’s really entertaining to watch the older couples bob and sway as they relive their youth, and as a younger music lover, it’s a enchanting to be a part of music from another era. This is one show that we will recommend to just about anyone, so make sure to catch him next time he’s in your neck of the woods.
