After months of waiting and a brief delay, we finally have our hands on Lost Cause, the eagerly anticipated project from Canadian native Tory Lanez. As we’ve alluded to in the past, Tory is a tremendous talent who’s finally ready to make a name for himself and take on the big stage. A true triple threat who excels at rapping, singing and production, the gifted musician takes the opportunity to flaunt his full repertoire of skills on this tape. Too often Tory draws comparisons to fellow Toronto native Drake, because they share a similar moody, lo-fi style, but a closer listen will reveal that the emcee stands in his own lane–no pun intended.
Upon first glance at the tracklist, one of the more admirable aspects of the project is that Tory doesn’t rely on any big name features to lift him up, instead choosing to place the spotlight on himself while leaning on a diverse stable of producers including Noah Breakfast, RL Grime, Ryan Hemsworth, Play Picasso, Christian Louie, SykSense and more, to help formulate a cohesive sound. Presenting a potent concoction of hip-hop and R&B, the tape features a few of our recent favorites like “I-95” and “Henny In Hand,” along with some fresh standouts like “Gold” and “Selfish // York University.” Stream the full project below, and hit the download link to grab a copy for yourself. We guarantee this one will be in constant rotation for quite awhile.
