Hunger
Who’s ready for a clashing spattering of nostalgia, overwhelmingly calling on associations of some of your post punk favorites? If you raised your hand as you read that last sentence, you’re definitely ready for “Hunger” from Brighton-based act Morning Smoke.
There’s just something about those distortion-rich guitars that calls on that feeling of teenage angst that so many of us experienced, ripping our eardrums apart with unbelievably high-volume headphone-adorned nights in bed. Morning Smoke embodies that experience, but does so in a refined, newly-approached sense.
Having just wrapped up a very busy summer, this four-piece has a musical maturity that most their age would ever dream of. All under the age of 20 years old, and having played together for just one year, these cats are boasting a sound that reminds old-timers of Sonic Youth and Joy Division, while giving the slightly younger crowd a hefty nod with their near-Strokes-style garage sounds.
Coupled with clashing percussion work and engaging lyrics, “Hunger” has us wishing we were going to be in Britain over the next coming month. If we were, we would most assuredly be catching one of these upcoming shows:
