[Hip-Hop] Wale & A-Trak – Festivus EP

Less than a week after announcing his new collaborative EP with A-Trak, Wale‘s new Festivus EP has finally arrived just in time for the holiday (for those of you unfamiliar with Seinfeld lore, I refer you to this.) Despite how you may feel about the quality of his studio albums, there’s no question Wale has always had a firm grasp on the mixtape game. That trend continues here, as Wale’s latest project falls right in line with previous Seinfeld-inspired works like The Mixtape About Nothing and More About Nothing. With a wide array of features including Pusha T, Chance The Rapper & The Social Experiment, Ab-Soul, A$AP Ferg and more, serves as a promising appetizer as a the seasoned emcee prepares to release The Album About Nothing sometime in 2015. Stream a few of our favorite selections from the project, and follow the download link below.

[Hip-Hop] Cam’ron & A-Trak – Humphrey

Cam'ron & A-Trak
Humphrey

When A-Trak released a video last week (via Instagram) teasing a collaboration with Cam’ron, the internet went wild. Well, we now have the first official look into the pair’s upcoming Federal Reserve EP. “Humphrey” has that distinctly Dipset flavor, hearkening back to the golden days of the Harlem collective, when the group was basically dominating the hip-hop airwaves between 2002-2006. This A-Track and Party Supplies produced cut gives us some hope that the group can find their way back into prominence, with Juelz Santana and Jim Jones both set to be featured on the EP as well. Take a listen to the track above, and stay tuned for more from Killa Cam and A-Trak as the year progresses.

[Dance] Duck Sauce – Duck Droppings EP

It’s a shame that I just sold my goldfish platform shoes on eBay. If I had those bad boys on me right now, I’d be lacing up and gliding across my office. The 70’s are back, ninjas, and they’re here via A-Trak and Armand Van Helden.

This often quirky duo, better known as Duck Sauce, throws conventional beat-smithing to the window, creating music that is quite simply smile-inducing.

In this four track EP, we’re transported to the days where John Travolta was king, dancefloors lit up with the music (what happened to that, by the way), and shirt collars went clear down to your nipples. In a fury of nostalgic samples, rythmic disco house beats, funky basslines and non-stop energy, these two have put out something that might have your parents asking for a link to this free download.

Our favorite out of the bunch has to be “Louie the First,” which samples Storie’s classic tune, “Brother Louie.” The simplistic, repetitious sample is amped up in comparison to the original tune, syncing perfectly with the twangy bass, and heavily accentuated drums.

All the Way Turnt Up with A-Trak [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Cruising down Park Avenue, we’re all dancing in our car. The speakers are louder than they rightfully should be, but that doesn’t matter because we already have a heavy pre-game buzz going. We’re heading to the club tonight, and A-Trak’s “Trizzy Turnt Up” is blaring loud enough for cars two lanes over to hear. They should be happy we’re sharing this tune with them though. It can make pretty much anyone want to dance.

That was a regular excerpt from any party night for us a few years ago. We couldn’t get enough of Dirty South Dance 2, or really anything that A-Trak did. It’s not that we were fanboys by any means, the guy just knows how to make good music that emodies what an epic night on the town should be.

From the early days to Tuna Melt, we’ve been jamming this Canadian’s dance inducing tunes, which is why we were ecstatic to have a chance to speak with him for a moment at Fool’s Gold Day Off in Boulder, Colorado. Check out what he had to say about Michael Jackson, Jay Z and the dressing up as a box of Kraft Mac ‘n cheese.

TMN: Thanks for taking a few minutes to sit down with us. How’s your visit to Colorado so far?

A-TRAK: Good. Yeah, it’s nice to be here. This is a state where I’ve done shows over the years and always noticed there’s a really captive audience here. Even going all the way back to when I was doing purely turntableist shows ranging to more recent stuff like Red Rocks with Bassnectar. I always noticed that there’s a really cool audience that just like is passionate about the music. Even my last tour like two years ago I played the Ogden theater, and that was a really cool show.

When we were planning Fool’s Gold Day Off this year, expanding to many cities, we had this thought of coming to Boulder to try to really foster a relationship with the audience here and create a long term thing.
