Lollapalooza 2016: Our Top Takeaways [Event Review]

As with any music festival, after Lollapalooza is over, it always takes us a few days to digest everything and snap back to reality. For locals, the festival serves as an escape within our own city. For outsiders, it provides them with a completely unique way to experience Chicago. The magic of Lollapalooza is simply unmatched, and despite a weather scare early on, Lollapalooza 2016 turned out to be just as memorable as years past. This year in particular will most likely stick out in the minds of many as it marked the 25th anniversary of the festival. Because of this, much of the weekend was filled with nostalgia as artists reflected on some of their past memories of playing the festival or of their ambitions to take the stage in Grant Park while growing up. For the first time ever, this year also added an additional day of festivities, kicking things off early on Thursday to commemorate the festival’s legacy. When we interviewed Phantogram a couple years back, one of the most exciting points of conversation was their rumored EP with Outkast‘s Big Boi, who they’d already worked with a few times with great success at that point. As of late, both have been sharing images from the studio bringing the hype to an all-time high for the long-anticipated project. Today, we get the first single from the Big Grams EP and it’s the perfect track to round out the summer.

With Josh Carter’s grandiose, Dilla-esque production and Sarah Barthel’s soaring pop vocals driving the vibe, Big Boi delivers perfect bars to match Phantogram’s enormous sound with his one-of-a-kind ATLien flow. “Fell in the Sun” truly embodies their irresistible collision of styles. With just one day remaining before the debut performance of Outkast‘s highly anticipated 40-stop reunion festival tour, we ninjas can not contain our excitement. To keep ourselves occupied as we impatiently wait for Coachella to kick off, we spent the last week putting together our dream setlist from the legendary hip-hop duo. Believe it or not, we’ve finally made it to the ninth and final installment of Big Boi‘s “Mashup Mondays” series. We’ve seen some pretty ambitious efforts so far, yet each single track leaves us even more amazed than the week before. This time Big Boi and DJ Dungeoneze team up to blend together the Kid Cudi-assisted “She Hates Me” with Stevie Wonder‘s “Part-Time Lover” to create the cleverly titled “Part Time Hater.” The previously morose single comes off as far more upbeat after its recent facelift, embedding more optimism in the song’s lyrics, which is reflected in the “glass half full” shown in the track’s artwork. If anything, the tune is worth a listen simply for the fact that you’ll never hear Cudi singing quite like this ever again.

Mashups have never really been my thing, but Big Boi‘s “Mashup Mondays” series has proven to be nothing short of brilliant. Breathing new life into an album that was already impressive on its own, each new remix has been just as exceptional as the last. This latest effort is no different, fusing the trap stylings of “In The A” with the buzzing electronic vibes of Kito & Reija Lee‘s “Run For Cover.” While that might sound like a recipe for disaster to some, all three emcees seem to fit in rather naturally over the bass heavy instrumental, with Reija Lee’s sweet, fleeting vocals serving as the perfect foil to the gruff and boastful lyrical content.

If there were ever any doubts about Big Boi’s diverse and eclectic taste in music, they should be put to rest by now, as he’s proven to have a perfect ear for these kinds of blends by now. While a new album from Outkast seems like nothing more than a pipe dream at this point, we can at least count on Big Boi to always deliver some quality material. For the fifth installment of his “Mashup Mondays” series, Sir Lucious Left Foot brings back the funk, with an 80’s inspired remix that blends the disco stylings of Shalamar‘s “A Night To Remember” with the Phantogram assisted single, “Objectum Sexuality.” The end result is a groovy revamp that may even trump the original. We’d even go so far as to say that this remix–along with its equally impressive visuals–is the best in the series so far. We’ve still got more four more entries to go though, before we can make a full judgment on that.

With the recent announcement that he’d be dropping a solo album sometime later this year, Big Boi has decided to tease fans through a remix series that re-envisions many of the tracks from his acclaimed 2012 effort, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. This week’s entry comes by way of Dungeoneze who mashes up “CPU,” featuring Phantogram, with Sade‘s “Nothing Can Come Between Us.” Titled “CPU 2.0,” this rework slows things down a bit, injecting the lovesick original with a smooth, laidback 90’s vibe. As excited as we are for this remake series, we’re still holding our breath for some new OutKast material before they embark on their 40 date tour throughout the U.S. later this spring. Check out the track above, as well as the previous remix in this series, a remix of “Thom Pettie” mashed up with “Thom Yarbrough.”
