[Hip-Hop] XV – Madness Begins EP

There was a time period between 2011 and 2012 when it seemed as if XV was right on the cusp of stardom. After signing a deal with Warner Bros. Records, and a string of successful mixtape releases (Zero HeroesPopular CultureSquarians Vol. 1) that saw his star rise higher than ever, it seemed as if all the right pieces were in place for the Kansas native to finally make that giant leap from Smallville to the big stage. Then 2013 came and went without much of a peep from the talented rapper, and the momentum he’d been steadily building just kind of fizzled out into a blip on the radar.

That’s not to say we’re not excited for new material from the gifted emcee, but it’s going to take a tremendous effort to get back to the stage he was at in his career. Madness Begins is definitely a step in the right direction. Composed of 8 tracks of new material, the EP serves as a refresher of what Vizzy can really accomplish when he puts pen to paper. We won’t go so far as to say that this is one of his best projects, but it solidifies his standing in the game, and lets us know that despite his brief sabbatical, XV hasn’t lost a step.

Madness Begins is just the first effort in a five volume #MarchMadness Free-Play series that’ll see new releases to coincide with different legs of the college basketball tournament. If it all goes to plan, this could be just the boost Vizzy needs to get his career back on track, as we all anticipate his long-awaited The Kid With The Green Backpack album.

[Electro Soul/Hip-Hop] Jr. Hi – Trillion Girls (Feat. Childish Gambino)

Jr. Hi
Trillion Girls ft. Childish Gambino

Like many artists to emerge through the blogosphere these days, Jr. Hi is a man shrouded in mystery, but one thing we do know about him so far is that he knows how to pick his partners well. After previously collaborating with The Weeknd on his first single “Secrets,” the Neon Gold signee reemerges with a Valentine’s Day treat alongside Childish Gambino. “Trillion Girls” is an enigmatic, slow burning affair, that steadily builds through a sultry mixture of hazy vocals, trippy synths and pounding drums. Bino helps kick the song off with a deeply provocative verse, rapped in a hushed tone that’s reminiscent of what he heard on Because The Internet. Grab the free download above, and make sure this is a fixture in tonight’s playlist.

[Album Review] Childish Gambino – Because the internet

’Childish Gambino – Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (feat. Azealia Banks)’

The actor-turned-rapper route is not unfamiliar territory for rising star Donald Glover. The stand-up comedian dropped an introduction to the inner workings of his creative mind and skills on the mic with the moderately successful Camp in 2011. Mixing together sounds of dubstep, dance, electronica, and pop, fans witnessed another side of the rising star under his alias of Childish Gambino. Although not album of the year material, the first effort from Gambino was filled with plenty of innovative sounds and autobiographical tracks that painted an extensive narrative of what makes Glover the artist he is. With his sophomore release Because the internet, Gambino continues his introspective saga and delves deeper into his fears of loneliness over colorful production with comedic delivery.

After the lackluster reception of his ROYALTY tape last year, Gambino parted ways from the hit NBC show Community to focus on his sophomore release. The unveiling of his short film, Clapping for the Wrong Reasons, and an accompanying screenplay only further provided fans with insight into the developing theme of the project, while steadily building anticipation as well. The end result became a conjunct LP separated into five distinct musical suites (recognized by the different roman numerals between the interludes) that reflect the multiple moods and, ironically, the multiple career paths of the artist.

Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 4]

It’s the first weekend of December, meaning I, like most of you out there, spent my Sunday stuck inside watching the snowflakes gently trickle down to the ground. Today, the multi-talented artist brings some visuals to the standout from his impressive sophomore effort. [NEW] Childish Gambino – Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (Feat. Azealia Banks)

Childish Gambino
Earth: The Oldest Computer (The Last Night) (Feat. Azealia Banks)

Spastic, reverberating, and high-energy make this new Childish Gambino single an addictive listen. “The Oldest Computer (The Last Night)” starts with a tranquil synth-beat intro that features the actor turned rapper singing the chorus. What starts peaceful quickly flips into a drum and bass fueled, pulsating electro beat that continues to grow in tempo and infectiousness. Don’t be fooled by the soft beginning, as Bino still manages to squeeze in some bars later in the track.

In contrast to his chill collaboration with Def Jam’s Jhene Aiko, “Bed Peace,” Childish enlists the vocal talents of Azealia Banks. No stranger to sporadic dance rhythms and synth-heavy production, the Harlem rapper trades tongue-twisting rhymes for some smooth crooning on the hook. As the single progresses over the four minutes, the mix of hard and soft melodies is abandoned at the last minute when the song erupts into pure pandemonium. This is yet another dope release from the young spitter and will be featured on his upcoming sophomore LP Because the Internet, available for pre-order now.
