Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 6]

Hope your chestnuts are roasting over an open fire, because tis the season to be soulful (or something to that effect). Here at The Music Ninja, we’ve really gotten into the spirit of the Holidays. While none of these tracks are explicitly Christmas themed, we believe we have the right mix here to keep your spirits up and your hearts warm. From remixes of classics by Alicia Keys, Lloyd, and Drake, to new melodies by artists like Tom MischThe Internet, Blackbear, T. Mills, and Py, there’s enough stocking stuffers here to keep everyone in the family happy. So gather around the tree, take a seat in a comfy pair of pajamas, and hold that mistletoe steady, because we hope this edition of Sunday Night Soul is one of the best gifts you unwrap all week (we think Santa would be very proud.)

[NEW] Beyoncé – Beyoncé: The Visual Album

’Beyoncé
Drunk In Love (feat. Jay Z)’
’Beyoncé
Superpower (feat. Frank Ocean)’
’Beyoncé
Mine (feat. Drake)’

The Holiday season is upon us, and in the spirit of giving Beyoncé has decided to drop a brand new album seemingly out of thin air. Titled Beyoncé: The Visual Album, the rather ambitious project features 14 tracks and 18 unique music videos. It’s difficult to determine what’s more remarkable here: the fact that Beyoncé can drop an album with virtually no promotion at all, or that she painstakingly took the time to shoot 18 individual music videos for all of these tracks without any details leaking out. This will certainly be an interesting experiment to keep our eyes on for sure, and we’d like to see what numbers Bey can pull off with her latest studio effort.

We’ve included some of our favorites here, but make sure to purchase the album on iTunes, which includes features from her husband Jay-Z, her daughter Blue Ivy, Drake and Frank Ocean. You can also catch previews for all her videos on YouTube.

[NEW] Timbaland – Know Bout Me (Feat. Jay-Z, Drake & James Fauntleroy)

Timbaland
Know About Me (Feat. Jay-Z, Drake & James Fauntleroy)

After alluding to this track awhile back, mega-producer Timbaland drops a brand new single featuring Drake and Jay-Z. The single, titled “Know Bout Me,” is a monster collaboration and very reminiscent of classic Timbo from the 90’s with heavy hitting bass and rim rattling studio effects. It seems the beef is squashed between the rapper and producer and now we get the aftermath of the make-up. At first listen, it definitely takes some getting used to as Timbo abandons the synth beats and electro rhythms for a more throwback flow. That might be something that new fans are not used to but still is just as good as his previous hits. With the addition of Drizzy and Hov delivering some dope verses and James Faunterloy crooning on the hook, this is a nice taste of what is to come from the Virginia native.

If you are feeling nostalgic, take a listen to the first single off his upcoming full length Textbook Timbo, and be sure to grab a copy when it hits iTunes December 3rd.

[Remix] Drake – Come Thru (James Blake Version)

Drake
Come Thru (James Blake Version)

Just when you thought those Drake remixes were finally slowing down, we get this brand new revision of “Come Thru” courtesy of James Blake. While the original was a little too playful for my tastes, Blake’s rework adds a sense of urgency to the track, especially when the ominous synths kick in around the one minute mark where Drizzy begins his verse. Of course the transformation wouldn’t be complete without Blake adding in his own backing vocals, which compliment the dark overtones added through his production. Check out the tune above, and let us know your thoughts. Hopefully this means we’re one step closer to hearing that collaboration between the two artists we’ve all been anxiously waiting for.

Drake – Hold On, We’re Going Home (MMG Remix) Feat. Rick Ross

Drake featuring Rick Ross
Hold On, We're Going Home (MMG Remix)

Hopping onto one of Nothing Was the Same‘s lead singles and catering to the ladies, MMG bawse Rick Ross lends his talents to the remix of Drake‘s hit “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” The smooth mix finds the Miami spitter talking during the intro and later spitting some bars in his deep voice over the original beat. Of course you can’t have a Ross track without the continuous ‘M-M-Maybach’ rip playing in the background. Finishing off with the same verses and chorus from the original, this track remains just as catchy as before. Take a listen below and be sure to hear more from the boss when Mastermind drops Dec. 17th.

[Album Review] Drake – Nothing Was the Same

’Drake – From Time (Feat. Jhené Aiko)’
’Drake – Furthest Thing’
’Drake – Tuscan Leather’
’Drake – Worst Behavior’

More than just the Adele of the rap game, Drake‘s ability to convey both sensitive and egotism with an ear for solid bars with catchy hooks have made him one of the highest selling artists in the industry. In just 4 years, the actor turned unlikely rapper/singer has achieved more with just 3 albums than most artists accomplish in a lifetime in the industry: sold out shows, millions of records, Grammy’s, and chart-topping singles. Now that Kanye West has chosen to explore more of an indie sound with his latest release Yeezus, Drake has arguably become the game’s new unchallenged crossover star. With his latest release Nothing Was the Same, he returns to the style of spitting about former relationships and braggadocious rhymes, but a little less formulaic than before.

Minus the obvious hits, “Started From the Bottom,” “All Me,” and “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” Nothing Was the Same features a more in-depth look into Drake’s life that further explores the upsides and downsides of fame on his personal relationships. On the opening “Tuscan Leather,” Aubrey takes a minute from crooning over hooks and choruses to deliver a straight rap that includes boasting and a mention of his short-lived fallout with fellow labelmate Nicki Minaj. “Too Much” featuring Sampha (of SBTRKT fame) delves into more personal and somber themes, as Drake spits about how the growth of his fame affects family ties.
