[Event Preview] TDE Presents: 1st Annual Kunta’s Groove Sessions – 11/5 @ Riviera Theatre, Chicago

Kendrick Lamar sent the internet into a frenzy last month with the initial announcement of his Kunta’s Groove Sessions tour via Instagram, with a caption that simply stated “8 cities. 8 nights, 8 intimate shows.” Since then, fans throughout the country have scrambled to get their hands on tickets which have sold out in mere minutes after going online. Prices on the secondary market have skyrocketed, especially in New York, where the cheapest available ticket at one point was $563 before they switched venues from Webster Hall to Terminal 5 according to Rukkus. Thankfully, the same has taken place here in Chicago, as the show has been moved from Concord Music Hall to the Riviera Theatre, providing a second chance to those of us that missed out the first time around.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the excitement for the tour stems from the release of Kendrick’s landmark sophomore album, To Pimp A Butterfly, which received plenty of critical and commercial acclaim. Since its release, fans have been clamoring for a chance to see Kendrick perform live along with his band The Wesley Theory. Opening up the tour is labelmate Jay Rock, who is fresh off the release off his own album, 90059, which features standout singles like “Money Trees Deuce” and “Vice City”.

Head over to the link below to grab yourself some passes before they sell out again for good, and if you’re not in Chicago make sure to check out the remaining dates on the tour.

[Hip-Hop] BET Hip-Hop Awards 2013: The Cyphers

The BET Hip-Hop Awards finally aired earlier tonight, and while I personally am not a huge fan of the show, there’s one segment that I eagerly anticipate every year: The Cyphers. The Cyphers are really where the event truly shines, bringing together some of the most talented emcees in the game, underground and mainstream. This year’s lineup is certainly a formidable one, featuring the likes of TDE, A$AP MobSlaughterhouseAction BronsonTravi$ ScottRittzJon Connor, and even some jokes courtesy of J.B. SmooveKevin Hart, and Nick Cannon. Check out the cyphers below, and let us know who you think went in the hardest (we’re guessing the popular answer will be Kendrick Lamar).

[NEW] Black Hippy – U.O.E.N.O. (Remix)

Black Hippy
U.O.E.N.O. (Remix)

Rocko‘s “U.O.E.N.O.” has been one of the hottest singles of 2013, garnering remixes from Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, and even Usher. Given that information, you know it was only time before the hottest collective in the game, Black Hippy, lent their talents to the Childish Major produced instrumental. In promotion of Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid m.A.A.d city world tour, the group put together a nice little video to let us know the importance of ordering tickets as early as possible. After about a minute of fooling around with Mac Miller though, the group blesses us with this little ditty right here. All four emcees sound right at home over the spacey backdrop, making it tough to figure out who killed it best. How would you rank their verses? Check out the stream above and let us know your thoughts about this trippy remix.

[Hip-Hop] Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank) (Black Hippy Remix) Feat. Jay Rock, Ab-Soul & Schoolboy Q

Kendrick Lamar‘s stellar debut album, good kid m.A.A.D. city, dropped today, and if you haven’t picked it up yet then you’re missing out on excellent tracks like this one right here. While many fans complained about the lack of Black Hippy members on the album when the tracklist was released, those who decided to cop the deluxe version were pleasantly surprised to find a remix to the album’s first single, featuring fellow TDE associates Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q and Ab-Soul. If you needed any more reasons to keep this song on repeat, you’ve now got three of them to add to your list.

[Hip-Hop] Kendrick Lamar – The Heart Pt. 3 (Will You Let It Die?) ft. Jay Rock & Ab-Soul

Kendrick Lamar continues to destroy the hip-hop game letting loose a lyrically powerful track with an old school feel featuring two of his fellow talented Black Hippy members, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock. “The Heart Pt. 3” is an introspective and emotional cut, on which Lamar and co. reminisce about their rise to fame. Kendrick exudes confidence even while admitting his own doubts and second-guessing as his voice becomes raspier and more expressive through out. Soul and Jay Rock hold their own on the track showing why they are two of the most underrated emcees out. Do yourself a favor and grab this awesome free treat below. Good Kid m.A.A.d. [Hip-Hop] Childish Gambino – Sour Face (ft. Jay Rock)

On Gambino’s most recent project, ROYALTYwe saw him team up with two members of Black Hippy, Ab-Soul and ScHoolboy Q. On Sour Face, CG enlists the most senior member of the crew, Jay Rock, for a track to ride to. Jay Rock’s aggressive, gangster flow fits surprisingly well with Gambino’s approach and this is yet another demonstration of the growth of Donald, exhibiting versatility while maintaining his uniqueness. After hearing this, I am highly anticipating a collaboration with the fourth member of Black Hippy, Kendrick Lamar. My favorite line on this one references the talented and beautiful Alison Brie, who is one of Glover’s co-stars on Community. In the Bay Area, we would refer to this as a SLAP.
