Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 22]

While most of the ninja team spent the weekend melting away under the desert sun at Coachella, the rest of us here at TMN have been hard at work to ensure that you have the latest and greatest tunes the internet has to offer. While FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out for those who don’t know) is inevitable while our eyes our glued to the live stream on YouTube, we’ve managed to keep ourselves relatively busy by scouring the net for the most serenely sublime tracks we could find. Although we expected a bit of a slowdown in output this week with the advent of festival season, we instead were surprised to stumble upon an overwhelming amount of material while assembling this magnificent playlist.

We can’t safely say we’ve covered everything here, but we’re fairly certain we’ve found the best of the best. Those include selections from Tin Gardens, D.R.A.M., Submotion Orchestra, Iman Europe, Tiara Thomas, Raleigh Ritchie, Betty Who, Bayou, Telescope Thieves, Joey Solo, XONA, WLYN, Falcons, Lido, Maryann, JENI, CompSci, woodini and Kwabs. Watch Performances From Last Night’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards

Let’s face it: the Grammy’s blow. They’re a total misrepresentation of the actual trends happening in music, and are usually at least two to three steps behind the curve. The Recording Academy is out of touch with the culture, and while the awards still have some meaning to them, the show lacks the same significance it had in previous generations. With that mini rant out of the way, I would like to congratulate all of last night’s winners, and don’t want to take anything away from the artists themselves or any of their accomplishments. What we are here to do today is highlight one of the positive aspects of the show: the performances. From 33 couples getting married during Macklemore & Ryan Lewis‘ rendition of “Same Love,” Kendrick Lamar‘s frenetic display during an insane mashup of “M.A.A.D. City” and “Radioactive” with Imagine Dragons, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr re-uniting as one half of The Beatles, and finally to Jay-Z and Beyoncé giving us a glimpse into their chemistry together on stage, this year’s awards had plenty to offer in terms of entertainment value. Check out some of the best ones below, and let us know your thoughts on which one was your favorite.

Daft Punk, Pharrell, Nile Rodgers & Stevie Wonder

John Legend – All of Me (Tiësto’s Birthday Treatment Mix)

John Legend
All Of Me (Tiesto's Birthday Treatment Mix)

John Legend may have the ladies swooning with his latest romantic ballad “All of Me,” but Tiësto keeps the dancefloor filled with his reworking. This new remix comes as a freebie for fans to get into, flipping the slow rhythm into a synth-heavy EDM gem. Still holding some of the romanticism of the original, Tiësto puts his work on the chorus, with a reverberating beat and slow vocals that make for an interesting dynamic to the ballad. Happy birthday to Tiësto and us.

[R&B/Soul] John Legend – Who Do We Think We Are (Feat. Rick Ross)

John Legend
Who Do We Think We Are (ft. Rick Ross)

After nearly five years, John Legend is finally gearing up to release his fourth studio album. Last week, John gave us a preview of his album with the stellar track, “The Beginning.” Today, he brings us the first single from Love In The Future, “Who Do We Think We Are,” assisted by frequent collaborator, Rick Ross. Believe it or not, after all the songs the two have made together, this is the first time Ross is returning the favor by appearing on one of Mr. Legend’s records. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and as always, Legend’s vibrant, soulful vocals steal the show, just as they rightfully should. Ross brings things down to earth a bit, but in a “let’s pause for a second and remind everyone I’m the boss” kind of way. “Who Do We Think We Are” definitely serves as an appropriate introduction to Love In The Future, and we definitely look forward to seeing what else John Legend has in store for us in 2013.

The Beginning

March has been a great month for some great new music. Following the trend of creating a Springtime buzz is the R&B superstar John Legend. Dropping his new fresh single “The Beginning” this afternoon, he returns to his traditional smooth sound. This Kanye West and David Tozer produced soulful jam finds the G.O.O.D. Music artist romancing listeners with some solid vocals over a piano and light drum beat. Coupled with some mellow string rips, Legend delivers a classic R&B/soul jam. This is the first single off his upcoming album Love in the Future.
