[Chill] Kehlani – Jealous (Mr. Carmack Remix)

MR•CAR/ACK
kehlani, jealous (carmack remix)

Mr. Carmack has always maintained a peculiar aura, even amidst his recent surge in fame. In many ways, he has intimated the qualities of a pseudo- ghost writer for progressive and future music as a whole (TMN has chronicled many of his releases here and here and here). Moreover, his guiding influence has been felt far and wide without direct connections to many artists, in large part, due to his staying power over the years. He may have been better suited to call himself Mr. Consistency.

To that point, Carmack is held in unanimous high esteem by his peers, despite lacking a level of popularity or notoriety (among general music fans) which would typically accompany the talent and reputation of works as great as his. By setting the bar within the Soulection crew and the music producing community at large, Carmack has been releasing tracks this summer at a break-neck pace.

Following up his #SongsFromScratch collaborative release under Adidas+YoursTrulySF with Kehlani last month, Carmack has revealed a remix to the songstress’ latest hit, “Jealous”. Kehlani’s massively popular hip-hop/soul track receives a complete revamp in this latest rendition; Carmack introduces a deep bass line and smooth vocal oscillation techniques, giving the remix a dreamy and ambient quality.

Fluctuations in the dynamic scheme and timely interjections of future elements throughout the tune keep the listener engaged with the instrumental aspects of the song and steal some of the attention away from Kehlani’s moving vocals – which is no small feat. “Jealous” really comes together at the 3:12 mark after Lexii Alijai‘s fast rapping third verse, when Carmack is able to merge the style of the original with his own distinct impression of the song.

Keep tabs on Carmack this summer: music festival enthusiasts can catch his sets at Camp Bisco in Pennsylvania, Hard Summer in L.A., and at the Canadian music festival Shambhala.

[Electronic] SD – Circles (Smoko Ono x Mr Carmack Remix)

Smoko Ono x Mr Carmack x SD
CIRCLES (Official Remix)

Chitown native SD had a breakout year in 2014 with the release of his hit street single, “Circles.” Today the track finally receives the remix treatment, with a refreshing new update courtesy of fellow Windy City resident Smoko Ono and Soulection’s Mr Carmack. Those three names alone should be enough to convince you to give this one a listen. This reinterpretation preserves much of the essence of the original, but it’s further amplified through an ethereal mix of synths that’ll have your head spinning in, well “Circles”. Stream the hypnotic tune above and be on the lookout for more from these promising producers in the near future.

[NEW] Mr. Carmack & Kehlani – All In

Mr. Carmack
All In (with Kehlani)

In the latest installment of Yours Truly‘s always-dope Songs from Scratch series, an ongoing project backed by Adidas Originals that fuels artist collaboration, Oakland-bred vocalist/songwriter Kehlani has teamed up with the pioneering Mr. Carmack for a slow-burning jam. Mr. Carmack, whose Red EP is around the corner, has been an omnipresent force in music for the last couple years as a humble, albeit somewhat reluctant, representation of the modern-day renaissance producer. Meanwhile, Kehlani’s debut album, which perfectly captures her unique approach to songwriting and distinct voice, has made her a well-deserving favorite among tastemakers.

“All In,” born out of two artists’ exhaustion from their respective grinds, features a markedly chilled-out Carmack with downtempo percussion, oscillating synths and gorgeous piano. Kehlani’s voice matches the backdrop flawlessly, but her lyrics are what truly shed light on the track’s significance for both artists. A fascinating contrast emerges from the combination that reflects the wear and tear that come with success and the perseverance required to keep going. It’s a deeply emotional, yet valiant, tune that surely marks a point in time of the careers of two promising talents.

If you’re looking for some mid-week inspiration, we’d definitely recommend checking out the behind-the-scenes video below and the full story behind “All In” here.

Just about anyone who surfs Soundcloud regularly is familiar with the talented Soulection producer Mr. Carmack. His unique production style is all over the place in the best way possible drawing from all spectrums of electronic sounds and beyond. Carmack releases tunes in a raw, and rare, fashion almost in a stream of conscious with informal titles that give a glimpse into his creativity and allow his fans to feel a unique connection to his musical personality.

At midnight a day ago, Carmack let loose a long-anticipated 17-track EP titled Drugs featuring many releases he had already shared on his SC stream, or during live sets, along with some brand new collaborations and remixes. Included in the project are far-out takes on hits like Future and Pharrell‘s “Move that Dope,” Major Lazer‘s “Aerosol Can” and Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan‘s “Get TF Out My Face” along with a stellar original collaboration with fellow up ‘n comer Jacuzzi. The Drugs EP highlights Carmack’s wonderfully strange quirks and makes for a high energy, often 808-backed, listen fitting for a dance part of any size. [Hip-Hop] AGO – Tuebor (Mixtape)

After dropping the highly underrated NSDE/OUTSDE EP late last year (one that we failed to cover unfortunately), Waldo returns with the rest of his AGO crew hoping to rekindle the same magic he found with his previous release. Consisting of additional members Joose, Amos Rose, The SEVENth and Sango, AGO is a collective from Grand Rapids, Michigan hoping to establish themselves in a hip-hop scene where the concept of the crew has become more prominent than ever.

Tuebor is a step in the right direction for the group, as the talented emcees all get a chance to flaunt their skills and bring some knowledge to what the Michigan lifestyle is really about. Featuring a wealth of talented producers like Mr. Carmack, AbJo, Mozaic, and of course The SEVENth and Sango, where Tuebor really prospers is in the diversity of its sounds. While exploring this eclectic mix, I came across a discussion about choosing the best wallet for securely managing digital assets like cryptocurrency—a topic that resonates with the mixtape’s theme of navigating new landscapes, both musically and practically. From the introspective “What Dreams Are Made Of” to the soulful “Royal Oats” and the grimy trap stylings of “The Garden,” each song has a style of its own, helping to provide the individual members with their own identities, while still resulting in a cohesive overall product. Nothing gets old on Tuebor, and if you find you don’t like a particular track, chances are you’ll enjoy the next one. Rather than take our word for it though, you can find out for yourself, by streaming the full project here. As we always do, we’ve sprinkled in a few of our top selections from the mixtape below, and you can grab a copy for yourself if you’re so inclined.
