Portugal. The Man Talk Charity, Danger Mouse, & Taco Bell [TMN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

Portugal. The Man
Evil Friends

Portugal. The Man have managed to stay busy and successful these past 10 years with seven studio albums and five EPs. The four-piece band has played sets at big-name festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, and will continue their performance streak with a multi-city tour through the US with Grouplove.

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, Portugal. The Man returned to San Francisco for the first stop of their tour: a special benefit show for StubHub’s Next Stage Concert Series. All ticket sales for the show will go to three Oakland schools through The Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, which helps fund music programs in underserved schools.

After their soundcheck, Portugal. The Man held a meet and greet with the opening act, a band from one of the Oakland schools. When the high schoolers left to play a soundcheck of their own, bassist Zach Carothers and keyboardist Kyle O’Quin talked to us about working with Danger Mouse, their Sumatran Tiger project, and Taco Bell.

TMN: Tell us about Alaska.

Zach: That’s where I’m from and where John and I met, and it was a huge inspiration to be up there. Obviously the natural beauty and isolation is really attractive, but the thing it lacks is direct influence. There’s not a huge art scene up there, not a huge music scene. So when we moved down to Portland, where we lived now, we got flooded with all this amazing underground media. We were going to shows every night for $3, seeing these little bands. It really inspired us to get out there and go for it. We decided to go on tour and we haven’t really stopped.

TMN: Nice, do you go back often and play a show there?

Zach: Yeah, at least once a year. At least. We try to go back twice, but it all kind of depends what the schedule is like. We always go back up for Christmas, so we play a show around then.

Modern Jesus (Charli XCX Remix)

Alaskan alternative band Portugal. The Man released one of the strongest projects of the 2013 with Evil Friends and have continued to keep their fans engaged while on tour with some pretty unique remixes from the likes of Alt-J, Danny Brown and Mike D of the Beastie Boys. The latest re-work, posted to the band’s YouTube page this morning,  may be the best yet as the U.K.’s Charli XCX transforms PTM’s “Modern Jesus” into a minimal, airy electronic masterpiece. With drums that could easily originate from a rap instrumental, the verses gain a certain groove and smoothness working to compliment their content. Meanwhile, there is a distinct progression that culminates in a stellar closing to the song. Peep above or check out the video, which features a sketch being made over a picture of Charli, below.

[Remix] Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends (Jake One Remix) (Feat. Danny Brown)

Portugal. The Man
Evil Friends (Jake One Remix Feat. Danny Brown)

If it’s “Evil Friends” you’re looking for, you could do much worse than Danny Brown. Danny isn’t shy when it comes to tackling beats, which explains why his list of collaborations includes names as diverse as Purity Ring and Charli XCX. Still, Portugal. The Man is unexplored territory for the Detroit spitter, but with the help of producer Jake One, the collaboration manages to work perfectly.

Flipping the title track of the group’s latest album, Jake One captures some of the more downtempo moments of the original, while adding in some steady drum patterns to transform it into a hip-hop ready soundscape. Danny handles the rest of the legwork, delivering some energetic yet effortless bars to help set the mood. It’s a great reminder of the diversity he employs, and the track helps to whet our appetite a bit as we patiently wait for Old, dropping September 30th. And if you haven’t listened to it yet, make sure to grab Portugal. The Man’s Evil Friends, in stores now.

Portugal. The Man has followed up their first single, “Evil Friends“, with a second single that demonstrates a very different musical direction. As opposed to the garage rock style found in “Evil Friends”, “Purple Yellow Red and Blue” shows off a more electronic side of PTM. Coupled with a heavy drum beat and typical falsetto vocals, this makes for a very appealing track and shows the versatility this band has. Every indication points to Evil Friends being a great album, but we’ll just have to wait until June 4th to find out.

[Festie Review] Snowball – Winter Park, CO

As fireworks reflected off the snow covered grounds of Winter Park, as insane light shows reflected off the neighboring mountains, as music goers covered from head-to-toe in snow gear jumped up and down continuously as incredible artist after artist took to the stages, Snowball 2013 can rate itself up there as one of Colorado’s best winter time festivals.

The layout was set up perfect with one main stage and two tents, each far enough away from one another that you could hear each artist clearly but close enough you could dance your way from set to set without freezing your buns off. There were plenty of great vendors, lots of delicious warm food and heating areas so when the toes and fingers needed a quick warm-up people had a place to go.

The festival started off with a bang Friday with the musical talents of Zion I, Porter Robinson, Krewella, Kendrick Lamar and ending the night was none other than a Rado favorite, Big Gigantic. Kendrick Lamar gave the crowd poetic justice and a hell of a lot more. He took that stage and showed just what a true rap artist he was; his vocals crystal clear, his words flowing with the rhythms and his stage presence captivating. Then Big G got on the stage and lit it up, literally and figuratively. Their light show is one for the books and their live musical instrument set is what ranks them up there with one of the best live performances to see. It takes a true artist to be able to go on stage and play their instrument live and these boys do it with such ease.

Saturday Winter Park saw a down pour of snow but that did not stop any of the festival goers from making their way to see the shows. More layers, hand warmers and a nice hot beverage got this day off to a great start. I have to give a shout out to Luminox. During his set, his computer screen was distorted and he couldn’t see what he was playing. But instead of throwing in the towel, he busted out a desktop screen, plugged in his laptop, and kept dropping some unbelievable trap. Kudos Lum, huge kudos. Portugal the Man and Datsik brought amazing energy to the day and the night was finished with Colorado’s favorite man of lights, Pretty Lights. Derek Vincent Smith, the name given by his mother who is always in the crowd supporting, has never failed to put on a captivating and memorable show. Between the light show and PL’s choice of tunes, from his new hits all the way back to some old favorites like Radiohead’s “Everything in its Right Place”, PL shut down the night leaving everyone’s bodies in a state of music euphoria.

Sunday was no day for rest for this festival with huge artists still stacked. K Theory, Ishi, Grizmatik and Flosstradamus were just a few names who threw down the dub, the jazz and the dirty trap. Then the perfect closer for the ultimate snow weekend, STS9 took to the main stage. This instrumental band mixes the sounds of rock, funk, hip-hop, drum and bass and a little jazz to capture every form of music that was present at Snowball this weekend. As the final fireworks lit the sky, every face in that crowd was smiling with the ultimate love for all the amazing music that had taken place over the weekend.

To all the artists who were at Snowball, thank you for coming to Colorado and making us fall in love with your music all over again. For the day dancing shows to the night thumping after parties. To the Snowball staff, you all did an amazing job and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for next year. And of course, to all the festival goers, keep fuckin rocking.

[Dubstep] Portugal. The Man – Sleep Forever (Bassex Remix)

After suffering a robbery of a lot of their gear, maybe this remix will put a smile back onto Portugal, The Man’s faces. The 4 peice band have some amazing songs on their latest EP ‘In The Mountain’ and this track ‘Sleep Forever’ has been given the downtempo, yet relentless dubstep treatment from Bassex. The sheer contrast from the late 60’s rock sound of Portugal, The Man to the bass drenched drones of Bassex leaves a void in the middle of the sound which for me forms the magic of this remix. With both Bassex and Portugal, the man both hailing from the US – let’s hope this is the first of many collaborations.
