[Hip Hop/Rap] Skizzy Mars – Way I Live

SkizzyMars
Way I Live

Anyone who grew up in the ringtone rap era will recognize this beat in a second. It’s none other than one hit wonder Baby Boy da Prince’s “The Way I Live” which we can still recite every line to although it came out in 2007. Clearly, it had a huge impact on our generation as Skizzy Mars, always known for keeping his ear to the ground, wipes off the dust and spits his own over it. It’s the perfect cumulation of a childhood well-spent and this track is now officially all Skiz’s. Mars always has something up his sleeve so be on the lookout for more material from the young rapper and soon.

[Hip-Hop] G-Eazy – Monica Lewinsky (Feat. Skizzy Mars & KYLE) + The Day It All Changed

With his debut album These Things Happen set to drop later this month, the homie G-Eazy decided to share a few freebies that didn’t quite make it to the album. While it would be nice to hear a preview of what Eazy has in store for us on June 23rd, we’re not complaining about the two unreleased tracks we have below. The first of these songs, “Monica Lewinsky,” finds the talented spitter getting in touch with his ratchet side, teaming up with frequent collaborators, Skizzy Mars and KYLE, to floss about the perks of the typical rapper lifestyle.

Things get a bit more serious on the second of the two releases, “The Day It All Changed,” as the talented emcee describes the moment his life was forever altered over an ominous instrumental provided by Kane Beatz. Both tunes are incredibly solid, and in our minds, could have easily made it on to G-Eazy’s album, or at least one of his mixtapes. It only makes us curious however about the material that did end up on the finish product, if this was left on the cutting room floor.

[Hip-Hop] Skizzy Mars – Pace (Mixtape)

Nearly a year after impressing us with his debut mixtape, Phases, Skizzy Mars is back once again with another brand new project, Pace. While Phases featured a broad array of assorted tracks that helped showcase Skiz’s diverse skillset, Pace seems to be a far more focused project, keeping a nearly singular sound throughout, with the central concept concentrating around women and relationships. For a fast-riser like Skizzy Mars, Pace could also signify an attempt to hit the brakes and take back the reins of his life, as he tries to determine the trajectory of his career.

Keeping the features to a minimum (Jon Waltz, Ms. Jones), Skizzy thrives in the spotlight, proving he can carry an entire album’s worth of material on his own merit. Production comes from longtime collaborators Michael Keenan and 6ix, who together, craft a vivid soundscape that allows the young 20 year old freedom to experiment, while still playing well to his strengths. As we’ve mentioned countless times before, Skizzy has a knack for creating songs that are as equally addictive as they are thought provoking. We’ve lined up a few examples for you below, but in order to get the full experience, you should check out the entire mixtape for yourself.

[Hip-Hop] Skizzy Mars – Too Ill (Prod. Michael Keenan)

Skizzy Mars
Too Ill (prod. Michael Keenan)

Skizzy Mars has definitely been on top of his game lately. After releasing the much heralded Phases nearly a year ago, Skiz had a relatively quiet 2013. While it’s easy to forget about artists during their brief lulls, we know Skiz spent his time in the lab wisely, waiting to return with a vengeance. Well, Skizzy Season is officially upon us now, as the 20 year old emcee has teamed up with producer Michael Keenan to string together a slew of smooth releases over the last few weeks.

His latest entry in that series, “Too Ill,” definitely lives up to its billing. Sampling the Snakehips remix of BANKS‘ “Warm Water,” (still one of our favorites at TMN), “Too Ill” features the NYC native playing to his strengths, utilizing his carefree, charismatic flow to weave together an intriguing narrative, while showcasing his penchant for crafting catchy hooks. Skizzy’s upcoming mixtape, Pace, is set to drop next week on March 4th, and we can’t wait to hear what else he has in store for us.

The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 3]

What up y’all? The Hip-Hop Dojo is back for round 3 and ready to bring you an onslaught of new hip-hop music. This week was dominated by Harry Fraud and Peter Rosenberg. With Rosenberg dropping his New York Renaissance mixtape today, we were provided with a slew of great releases from some of The Big Apple’s best and brightest young emcees. The intro to the tape, is also the first collaboration between Joey Bada$$ and Harry Fraud. “Day In The Life” showcases that throwback flow that Joey and his Pro Era crew have been perfecting since they first entered the game. On the next track from the compilation, Queens collective, World’s Fair, revive the gritty spirit of the ’96 Knicks, harkening back to the heated rivalry between two of the NBA’s toughest squads of the late 90’s. The last single from the tape is Action Bronson‘s “Compliments 2 The Chef” where he spits a few bars about his favorite subject: exquisite food. Anyone else think a remix with Raekwon is in order for this one?

Speaking of New York, we’ve included a nice little project from Jay Shell that all you hip-hop heads will definitely enjoy. Taking quotes from various rap songs about specific spots in NYC, Jay Shell then posted those quotes as signs around the city in the exact locations mentioned. It’s a pretty neat idea that really connects you with the artists and the meaning behind their lyrics. Check out the video after the playlist.

Before we even get to New York though, we have to travel through Chicago. While Martin $ky tries to capture his memories in the form of a “Polaroid,” SaveMoney‘s Sterling Hayes recruits D2G and Kembe X to reflect on some of their own. We then take a brief detour to the Southwest, to visit a “Church” in “West Texas” as Austin native M.I and Blu reveal their struggles with faith. Next up, we have a great new track from California’s Audio Push, who sample the most badass quote of all time, from the greatest show on television, Breaking Bad.

Our next two tracks may have the illest beats to be featured on here this week. The first of these comes in the form of Smith‘s “Don Sh*t”. Smith, who may want to consider using with a more distinctive moniker, absolutely murders the Woodro Skillson (now that’s an awesome name) produced cut alongside Maffew Ragazino. Following that up, we have a dope, chilled-out track from Al-Fatir , where he describes to us the life of a “Man From The Sky.” We also have “Bubble Gum Blues,” a Mac Miller produced cut that features Top Dawg’s Ab-Soul trading bars with Young Money’s Short Dawg. Making his third appearance in the Dojo, is King Chip, with the grimy new track, “Heinous.” At this point, we might as well just give him a key to the building. We’ll have to see if he keeps his streak going next week.

As we approach the home stretch, we decided to take a turn a more “fun” approach towards the remainder of our selections. Wale‘s freestyle over the group’s “Sight of the Sun” definitely fits the bill, and is a refreshing break from the MMG dynamic we’ve been hearing from the DMV native lately. Sol‘s “Dope” is a light and airy track that definitely lives up to its name. Next up, we have Outasight‘s “Remember Me” which is a smooth leftover from his debut album, Nights Like These. Finally, we wrap things up with a two-for-one with Honors English‘s “Insanity Plea Pt. 1 & 2.” Honors English describes life as an artist with integrity and consequently, an outsider looking in. What originally sold me on the track is the incredible lyrics video, which is definitely a must watch.

I hope you guys enjoyed the third edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo. As always, send all submissions and suggestions over to baseer@themusicninja.com.

[Hip-Hop] Skizzy Mars – Phases (Mixtape)

New York-based rapper, Skizzy Mars, has been garnering a lot of buzz over the last few years with his music. While he would constantly surprise us with quality material from time to time, fans were itching to hear a full body of work from the young emcee. We finally have that project in the form of his new mixtape, Phases, which proves the wait was well worth it. While fans will be delighted to see the return of hits like “Pay for You” (with G-Eazy) and “Douchebag,” it’s the new material we’re all excited about, and Skiz does not disappoint. Phases is the type of project that both fans of hip-hop and pop can enjoy. Skizzy Mars is one of the few artists out there who’s able to effectively combine catchy, flavorful hooks with raw, intelligent lyricism. Picking out standout tracks from the project proved to be a bit difficult, but each one of the chosen few below brings something different to the table. The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 1]

It’s been a long time in the making, but it’s finally here! Ladies and Gentleninjas, I now present to you: The Hip-Hop Dojo: Volume 1. You may find yourself asking what exactly to expect upon entering the Dojo.Well, that’s a very good question. The Hip-Hop Dojo allows us to share with you all the great hip-hop music that’s dropped over the last week that either a) we didn’t have time to get to OR b) we may have mistakenly missed. We then present all those tracks in one neat little playlist, with a short sentence or two describing each song. Take a listen below, and make sure to download all the FREE tracks here.

Serving as the intro to our playlist, we have Skizzy Mars‘ “15,” a cascading and uplifting song that’ll be the project starter on his upcoming mixtape, Phases. We then continue the trend with three more inspirational tracks. The first of those is “All I’ve Ever Dreamed Of” by HS87, which takes the namesake of their recent mixtape release. “All I’ve Ever Dreamed Of” is a song with almost two sides. Just as you begin to get a feel for Robin Thicke‘s triumphant chorus, the song slaps you in the face with some banging drums. What else would you expect from a Hit-Boy produced track? Next up on the list is a new single from up-and-coming Philly-duo OCD: Moosh & Twist from their Back to the Basement mixtape. Through the song, the two take turns rapping and singing about their ascent towards worldwide notoriety. If you’re looking for something particularly cheery to brighten up your day, I suggest checking out the music video for this one as well.  Finally, rounding out our trio, we have an extremely playful and fun track by DMV-bred Roy Murci called, “Magic Johnson” that definitely has a Wale-esque vibe to it. The next track in the lineup we have is essentially a remix of a remix, as STS tackles Adventure Club‘s remix of Flight Facilities‘ “Crave You” to profess his absolute love for gold. Following things up, we have another new track with a famous sample as Big K.R.I.T. flips James Blake‘s “The Wilhelm Scream” to reflect on his state of mind as he prepares for his upcoming mixtape, King Remembered In Time.

Moving on, what Dojo would be complete without an appearance from a member of the Wu-Tang ClanRaekwon reminds us of the good ol’ 90’s with his newest effort, spitting some elegant bars over a soulful backdrop. Keystone-native, Tayyib Ali also revives that old school aesthetic, proving that he does anything but follow “The Script.” Next up, we have duo Kidz In The Hall, who bring us a dazzling, head-bopping single in “No Doz.” We then shift over to the West Coast to the savvy pairing of TiRon & Ayomari who forget their filters when discussing their ideas of love and women. Crossing back across the country to New York, we we find Torae and Skyzoo who to want to remind us of the message Wu-Tang made famous 20 years ago, letting us know that “Cash Still Rules” everything.

As we continue forward, we come across a couple of bangers to turn up with your headphones plugged in. TermanologyEa$y Money, and Nitty Scott MC all flex their mic skills for the hell of it over a reverberant, guitar-laden beat on “Bars For Days”. Our next two tracks feature a common subject: every rapper’s favorite herb. While King Chip takes us to a place known as Clevelafornia to tell us where he prefers to smoke his, the boisterous Sahtyre creates a complete dedication to his favorite vegetable over an insanely wild, high octane beat. Chitown natives Joey Purp and Kami De Chukwu may still be young, but they provide us with some brief insight to all the fun to be had at an “Illuminati Slumber Party.” Staying within the confines of the illest city in the Midwest, Cracko Kain & Vic Spencer speculate upon the state of Chicago operating under martial law. Boldy James’ “Goose Egg,” is a haunting yet infectious number, that’ll have you pressing play again the second it ends.

The final three tracks are meant for more mellow occasions, when you’re looking to just kick back and unwind to some relaxing tunes. We start that process off with SMKA‘s “Good Life.” Laced with a euphoric beat from Kato, ATLiens Playboy TreSpree Wilson and Marian Mereba all discuss the struggles endured during the quest for the good life. Coming from young Japanase duo BenZel, “Semi Detached” is a raw, emotional track with stellar, ethereal production that reaches you right to the core. Chance the Rapper blesses the track with a casual, yet introspective guest verse, while British crooner Cass Lowe tugs at our heartstrings with his delicate, whispering vocals. Last but not least, we have the multi-talented MeLo-X, coming to us with “Handle It” which will be featured on his upcoming GOD: LoFi project. With this latest effort, MeLo is able to show off his skills as both a producer and rapper, as he takes M-Phazes‘ remix of Gotye‘s “Somebody I Used To Know” and transforms it into a seductive, soothing bedroom anthem.

We really hope you enjoyed the first edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo. If you have any submissions or suggestions for the next edition, feel free to send them to baseer@themusicninja.com.
