Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below.

This week’s collection includes multiple doubles. By doubles we mean you’ll be seeing more than a few names repeated multiple times throughout. Whether it’s through remixes or features, what it indicates is that plenty of your favorites were incredibly busy this week. Memphis native 21 hasn’t been featured on our pages before, but if he continues to churn out gold like this, chances are you’ll be seeing his name far more frequently around here. While hip-hop is no stranger to feelings of unrequited love and forlorn loneliness these days, the 19 year old, takes a fresh approach to the topic that many more seasoned emcees haven’t tried before. Utilizing complex wordplay and armed with confident wisdom beyond his years, the young rapper provides insight into a situation most of us have had the misfortune of dealing with before. 21 recently detailed some of this own thoughts about the track in an interview with Pigeons & Planes:

Basically ‘The Pink Bride’ is about loving someone who doesn’t fully love you back or love you back at all, which is something we’ve all been through,” 21 explains. “If you listen to the hook, she says, ‘I wanna say I love you, but it’s alright.’ That essentially sums everything up. So my process was just me thinking back on girls in the past who have led me on and had me in deep love with them, only to say they don’t feel the same way or only to be halfway in it. And the same for me, the girls I’ve led on and made them feel like I love them or was in love with them, only to let them down by not loving them the same. So it’s just about me telling my story about a girl (The Pink Bride) who led me to believe that she loved me as much as I loved her only to come to find out that she didn’t.”

Much of the single’s success can also be attributed to the use of Ta-Ku‘s “I Miss You” as the song’s instrumental, which itself utilizes a sample of Willow Smith‘s “Summer Fling,” whose sweet, almost despondent vocals add an extra layer of depth to the song’s message. Expanding on the concept Ta-Ku outlined in his own Songs To Break Up To EP, this one’s perfect for the heartbroken and the downtrodden among us, but still makes for an enjoyable listen regardless of your current mood.

Starting off with 3 tracks from Mr. Carmack, featuring his remix of “Aerosol Can” and recent Seppuku EP with Jacuzzi. Next up is a FREEbie from none other than Zeds Dead, and they remix Son Lux‘s track “Flickers”. ODESZA just dropped off this epic take on Pretty Lights track “Lost And Found”, both tracks being featured on the Divergent Soundtrack. Night Kruise is hailing from down under and brings some serious vibes with this track “Sunsets”. Falcons is killing it in 2014 and this remix of M.I.A.’s track “Yala” is very on point. To make up for not dropping a Trap Dojo last week, we pulled out all the stops for #60. Starting off with What So Not‘s most recent anthem, “Jaguar”, no comment. Bro Safari and ETC!ETC! can do no wrong as they team up to remix Sub Focus‘ track “Turn Back Time”. LMC and Wayvee tackle Juicy J and Pusha T‘s track “Body Work”, just take a listen, it’s glorious. The Reddit discovered, upcoming prodigy, Electric Mantis comes through with won of the sexiest tunes of the most, titled, “Flip And Flops, Drips And Drops”. Fools Gold Records had Nick Catchdubs release a mashup titled “Brown Bells – Dippin Demons” featuring Danny Brown’s vocals from “Dip”. Combined with Diplo’s remix of Sleigh Bells‘ track “Demons”, resulting in one of the most insane tracks in the Dojo. TC, who is mostly known for his mind blowing Drum N Bass, drops a horn infused, 808 banger, titled, “Do You Rock”. Childish Gambino has been on a roll the last few weeks as he prepares for the December 10th release of his second album, Because of the Internet. Earlier today, Bino re-tweeted a status from actor Michael B. Jordan, of The Wire and Fruitvale Station, that included the dreamy “Telegraph Ave.” and a remix from up and coming producer Ta-Ku. While we saw the higher-energy, punchline-heavy Childish on “Sweatpants”, he showcases his singing chops over floating, synth-heavy production only rapping briefly, but effectively, around the 2-minute mark. The title of the song refers to a main street that covers multiple cities, including Oakland, within the East Bay Area. While pure speculation, it seems possible that Michael B. Jordan’s recent role as Oakland’s Oscar Grant in Fruitvale Station has some thing to do with the way it was released.

While the original is a treat in itself, the Ta-Ku remix might be the true gem of this release. The Huh What & Where affiliated artist puts a beautiful twist on the track chopping, and distorting, the vocals and speeding things up a bit with a variety of unique percussion.
