It is always tough for our Resident Artists to come up with their top 5 songs of the moment because let’s be honest, there is always a lot of good music at all times of the year. But low and behold, our Residents always come up with amazing songs that speak highly to who they are as artists. The Chainsmokers had to change their list a few times because of all the good music being constantly played on their computers and in their headphones but finally came up with a list of 5 fabulous songs that will make any summer day 100 times better. Take a listen:
[TMN Resident Artist] The Chainsmokers Top 5 Songs
[TMN Resident Artist] The Chainsmokers chat us up on NYC, not being selfie experts, and how they came to be
Like A Drum (The Chainsmokers Remix)
TMN: Say hello to our handsome, furry browed Resident Artists for the month of June, Alex and Drew, or as many of you know them, the boys behind Chainsmokers. Gentlemen, welcome and thank you so much for being a part of the ninja family this month!
TMN: Well usually interviews go from the beginning until the present but because we think you appreciate a little backwards banter, let’s start from today and work our way back. You are currently in Australia on tour, how are you enjoying your time down under?
Chain: Its been incredible. Neither of us have ever been to this side of the world so that alone as an adventure has been great, we have surfed bet koalas, ate kangaroo and drank a ton of beer. That aside the shows all have been so fun and the cool thing about OZ is the ppl here really know their music. The dance scene has been prominent for ages and you can feel it at the shows. Its also crazy to see that your music has reached a place so far away. Oh and OZ girls are really fit….
TMN: Right now, you boys are quite a hot commodity in the EDM world and honestly, in a larger music scene. A lot of this success can be credited to the almost instant fame of your hit song ‘SELFIE’ which can be heard in any club, car, or gym. Talk to us about the how the concept came up for that song and if you guys will continue on the one word song with another trending subject?
Chain: We have talked about this song a lot so we really aren’t going to go into much depth. It was a fun idea we had to promote a party we had at Miami’s nightclub Liv. We were toying with the concept of a song about club girls and being vain and selfies. It really materialized in about 1 hour and we gave it originally as a free download. Haha we love the idea of working music together with good packaging be that artwork, marketing, live elements whatever it may be, so moving forward we will always try and figure out unique interesting ways to deliver our music, but with that said we have no interest in being the artist of social media and cultural trends. After trying out the linkedin prospecting software for promotional activities, we struck gold with selfie but we just thought it was a funny idea, that’s all… Moving forward we do love pop culture, and we love the idea of our music being enjoyed by as many ppl as possible, and that’s something that’s always interested us, so our future tracks will surely have those underlying elements, but we will just continue to do what we think is cool and not let the world dictate our sound.
Chain: We made the song, but we don’t give a shit about selfies… You want a selfie go for it, hell we will gladly be in it, but we refuse to be any authority on the proper way to take one haha…
TMN: Now before the current success, you boys kind of found your niche with remixing songs. From artists like Ellie Goulding to BANKS (one of my favorites just fyi) to Little Daylight, all of your remixes have a unique and individual sound to them. You have such a range of remixing, from calm songs to upbeat songs, how did and do you go about figuring out a song to remix? And being a duo, do you both have to like the song or has there ever been an overriding if one of you just absolutely feels one song?
Chain: Why thank you 🙂 We definitely love the banks remix cause it showed a real range in our production and type of music we enjoy. We definitely don’t want to be pigeonholed in anyway. Kaskade once said to his fans that artists grow, and naturually tastes evolve as do interests, making music is a very emotional and refractory. So we always find ourselves pulling from different genres and wanting to try new things out. When it came to figuring out what to remix, initially it was a question of knocking on 20 doors and getting two to open. We wanted to make original music but we had no fan base and no good vocals. We saw remixing as the perfect way to show our talents and style as producers in that we could use vocals we really loved and re-imagine songs we liked, sort of like a shortcut almost. Also, they provided us with a great way to peel fans off other artists and sort of attract ppl to what we were doing by the means of other artists popularity like Phoenix. The factors of a remix always change though, we could simply love the song and have a great idea or it could be a quid pro quo situation, usually its both. We love to release lots of content and this is a fun way to create different styles of chainsmokers’ music with out buying the house per se. As for us, we really always see eye to eye on songs, its funny but our taste in music is very very similar and the way we look at music isn’t necessarily the same but we both walk away with the same feeling from a song we like, so often that part is very easy. A good remix for us takes about a day to make…
[TMN Resident Artist for June] Time to take a #Selfie with The Chainsmokers
Oh June, you kind of just sneaked up on us didn’t you? Summer is upon us and as the months change it is time for a new Resident Artist. Who better than the boys who gave guys and girls the green light to taking pictures of themselves in bikinis with duck lips, suns out guns out, and slightly seductive glances in hopes of some likes on the good old social media outlets?
The Chainsmokers are two wonderful gentleman who hail from New York. Alex and Drew are wise beyond their years and aggressively handsome, both overachievers who are focused on success. Never before has the world seen two furry browed individuals such as these two (seriously they have really bushy eye brows). Apart from Social Darwinism, the thing that separates these two men from the rest is their unsettling and uncanny ability to discover and create trends. They find the parts of things that people actually give a shit about, whatever they may be, and focus on creating and improving those parts. With live sets and productions that their own mothers describe as, “sounds nice, but a little loud,” these two always put on a show that was not ever described as sexy and life-changing, but should be. Apart from their unique personalities and boyish good looks, they have many similarities. They each graduated from prestigious North-Eastern Universities, they like hot chicks in yoga pants, enjoy a good burger, and have been rejected from many of the venues they now play at. The Chainsmokers have become the hottest young American EDM DJ duo. Their live shows are becoming the most sought after in EDM. Their wild antics, hilarious personalities, and addicting productions have fans interacting with them non stop and running to see them live every chance they get. Their signature sound has its foundations in Indie, Progressive and Pop Music. On the production front, their original tracks have all reached the Beatport top charts and their remixes always hit #1 on the HypeM charts. They’ve gotten immense support by friends such as Nicky Romero, Steve Aoki, Pete Tong, Afrojack, Tiesto, W&W, and more. Their first major release, #SELFIE, and its official music video swept the world, so look out for much more to come and a very fun month ahead.
[Trap] The Chainsmokers – #SELFIE (Prince Fox Remix)
#SELFIE (Prince Fox #Remix #Edit)
We already know what you’re thinking, “#SELFIE? Please no.” Don’t worry, we aren’t here to get The Chainsmokers viral jam stuck in your head, but let’s face it, you’re probably trying to decide what filter to use for the selfie you just took. XX Pro or Valencia? We understand you want to look tan.
After perusing through SoundCloud, we stumbled across yet another #SELFIE remix and thought to ourselves, “not this again”. Little did we know, we had just discovered the most hyphy remix of this track to date. New York producer/student, Sam Lassner – AKA Prince Fox – decided to twerkify The Chainsmokers’ #SELFIE and give us another justified reason to take narcissism to the next level. As if we aren’t egotistic enough in this world, Prince Fox made it clear that being self-absorbed is acceptable by society…especially if you’re able to dance it out at the same time.
With a roaring bass-line strong enough to set off the San Andreas fault, Prince Fox puts his signature tweak on this revolutionary gem and takes #SELFIE to a dimension full of 808s and grimy beats – two of which are in this song. Have a listen for yourself but make sure you have your cameras ready.
[ULTRA 2014 Schedule Recommendation] TMN’s Must See Guide to Ultra (Miami 3/28 – 3/30)
Ahh. The time is finally here. All winter long we’ve been angrily looking at the calendar, not-so-patiently awaiting the start of festival season here in the states. To kick things off in 2014, we’re obviously overwhelmingly excited for what Ultra 2014 is bringing to the table.
As you would guess, this year’s line up is stacked, as usual. There’s a veritable pantheon of EDM legends, coupled with some amazing up and coming artists as well. We traditionally like to do a full stream of everyone that’s going to be there, but this year we’re going to change it up. Instead of giving you a tiny sample of each artist who’s playing, we’re going to give you our recommendations, day by day.
Scheduling is going to be tricky, so make sure you set out a proper game plan. It might be hard to stick to after a few beverages, but take it from us – don’t miss out on seeing your favorite artist, or any of these suggestions below:
Friday March 28th
Chainsmokers – Stage 7
Picked by Bryn Carter & Clayton Warwick
TMN Staff Comment: Two handsome devils reigning from New York who can make ANY song the ultimate remix. Make sure to check out these two who will keep your feet moving and your mind spinning with their intense indie/electronic melodies.
Friday March 28th
M.I.A. – Live Stage
Picked by Eric Gossett
TMN Staff Comment: The ever-controversial M.I.A. is definitely a “don’t miss” performance at this year’s Ultra Music Festival. The singer just released her critically-acclaimed album Matangi last year and is currently being sued by the NFL for $15 million for her performance at the Super Bowl. So if that was what they (couldn’t) show at the Super Bowl, I can only imagine how wild her uncensored stage show must be.
Friday March 28th
12TH Planet – UMF Radio Stage
Picked by Clayton Warwick
TMN Staff Comment: Last year, I had the pleasure of introducing someone to trap, and did so by watching 12th Planet’s set on Sunday afternoon. This well respected, LA based producer will be throwing down a massive set full of filthy beats. If you want to get down and dirty, don’t miss this set.
Go Down Sunshine (12th Planet Remix)’
“Paper” on @smogrecords’
Friday March 28th
Kill The Noise – UMF Radio Stage
Picked by Michael Serratore
TMN Staff Comment: There are plenty of players in the world of filthy bass, but no one does it quite like KTN. There’s an undeniable energy in everything he does, and that will only be taken to the next level amongst a crowd of frenzied fans
Friday March 28th
Chance the Rapper – Live Stage
Picked by Baseer Ahmad and Clayton Warwick
TMN Staff Comment: You say you’re going to Ultra to only listen to beats? Don’t limit yourself. A break in the bass will be welcomed, and who better to give you said break than Chi-Town native, Chance the Rapper?
Friday March 28th
The Glitch Mob – Worldwide Stage
Picked by Rachel Haroldson
TMN Staff Comment: This is a no brainer. Glitch Mob absolutely throws down with live performances, from the insane stage set-ups to the energy of the group, you can just see that these guys have a passion for performing and love giving the audience an unforgettable show.
Daughter – Medicine (The Chainsmokers Remix)
Medicine (The Chainsmokers Remix)
By now you know how enraptured we are by London’s folk rock trio Daughter, but did you know we also have a soft spot for New York electronic duo The Chainsmokers? We’ve featured a number of their remixes in the past, but this one, “Medicine”, is especially breathtaking as it features both artists. Listen to it above, and below, the remixing pair share a few words about the rework:
“We heard this song on a depressing cold winter day in NYC (it can get pretty bad) but as soon as we heard the haunting voice of Elena from Daughter and the bands equally incredible wallowing piano chords, we didn’t necessarily feel happier, but we fell in love with the song and knew we had to try give our Chainsmokers touch to it without ruining the already beautiful song.”
Overdose (The Chainsmokers Remix)
It seems we here at TMN can’t get enough of all things Little Daylight. Though they stormed the interwebs with their delicious … Continue reading
