Last week’s mini-mix for TMN, by our resident artist Thomas Gold, was an amazing hit with old fans and new fans alike. This whole month with Gold has been extraordinary and he has gone out of his way working with us at TMN to give all his followers what they want, what they didn’t know they needed and of course, lots of unexpected greatness. As always the end of the month means it is time to say goodbye to Gold but as always we wanted to give a shout out to Thomas and the awesome group of people who he works with.
Before we say our final goodbye though we asked Gold about some of his favorite songs and/or artists right now and if he could share those with us. Gold wrote back saying the five tracks below were songs he loves to throw down in his sets mixed in with his own golden touch. Can’t say we are surprised by his choices, these are some great songs/remixes by some talented artists.
Thanks for the awesome April Mr Gold-i-locks, best of luck for the rest of the year and we hope to see you real soon!
Thomas Gold’s 5 must play songs:
Sebjak & Marcus Schossow – Liceu
Mat Zo & Porter Robinson – Easy (Botnek Remix)
Steve Angello & Matisse & Sadko – SLVR
The Chemical Brothers – Galvanize
Hard Rock Sofa – Rasputin
As part of the TMN Residency we ask our artist for an exclusive mashup, remix, or a personal mini-mix. Mind you, we love all and everything the artists give us because they love spoiling TMN followers, but everyone loves an exclusive tune. So, when I opened my email with the title “The Music Ninja Spring Mix 2013 by Thomas Gold” I almost had heart failure with excitement.
I could go on and on and on about how I listened to the private link over and over again on my computer, turning the volume to the top notch while my desk vibrated with all the amazing mixes on here. Or, I could just tell you that this is one exclusive mini-mix is more of a gift than anything else. Thomas, if you are reading this, thank you for showing TMN followers and all your other fans just another reason you are so amazing with this incredible mix.
Turn it up kids, this is one mix you won’t want to stop listening to.

Thomas Gold is no new name to the house music world, dare I even say to the music world. He has already had an incredible year that will continue into the summer festival season that is slowly creeping up on us. We were beyond excited to get to spend some one on one time with Gold while scaling the Ultra Music scene in Miami a few weeks back and we are thrilled that we get a second opportunity to sit down with the house legend to go beyond the music and really discover what makes Gold so Gold.
TMN: First off Thomas, you already know we at TMN are such, such huge fans of yours and your set at Ultra was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. Tell us how you felt about the Ultra experience, when you weren’t driving around in your personal Thomas Gold fan bus with all your ecstatic fans? (In case you didn’t know, Thomas had a TG Fan Bus made up with a DJ booth, a dance floor and a few bars for his fans and fellow DJ’s to enjoy. Brilliant idea).
Playing Ultra (this was my first time!) was such a great experience, it was simply overwhelming! I was lucky to play two different stages, the Megastructure stage at weekend 1 and then main stage at weekend 2. And both of them were incredible. The light and FX system in the megastructure was one of the most impressive and biggest I’ve ever seen and the energy in the tent was huge! I still get goosebumps from watching the videos. And then of course, playing Ultra main stage in front of all these people was another level. You could feel how much fun the people had and I got quite excited while I was playing, seeing all those hands in the air! The whole Ultra experience was just breathtaking.
TMN: As the summer season approaches, where are you looking forward to playing the most? Any certain festivals or cities that you always look forward to playing in?
I’m really looking forward to play in Ibiza again; I actually can’t wait to get all my dates! And of course I’m stoked for Tomorrowland and the upcoming EDCs as I have so great memories of playing there last year!
I’ll be doing a big US tour all through May and from then on I’ll be going back and forth between Europe and America, and there are so many places I love to play. I think it’s also this kind of summer vibe, which I’m excited about in general!
TMN: We know that your music history dates back to when you were a small boy and you had electronic keyboard lessons. You always say you need a real keyboard in front of you whenever you make your music. Do you ever just have a day where you jam out on your keyboard or do you happen to have a baby grand laying around the house?
I do not have a baby grand but in fact, I have a lot of keyboards laying around in my house haha! I’ve got them in all different sizes from very small (which fits into my laptop bag) up to my main keyboard in the studio (which has weighted keys like a real piano keyboard). Sometimes I just spend hours jamming around with no special focus. It’s just about the fun. But I get a lot of ideas out of these random “sessions” which I save in my computer and these can always be a starting point for a new track!
Apart from this, I’m still trying to get used to play melodies and chords on my laptop keyboard and I’m slowly getting better!
TMN: Now let’s shift over to some questions with a little spunk in them. Your last name is Gold, is that your real last name or a stage name that you took?
Gold is a stage name. Thomas although is my real name.
TMN: Please tell me someone has given you a few amazing nicknames, for example, King Midas, Gold Finger, Goldilocks (no blonde hair but hey, you may like porridge right?)
Oh yes, there are a few! But mostly I’ve heard Goldfinger and Goldilocks!
TMN: You are from Germany, the country of beer, sausages and Oktoberfest. Are you a beer, sausages and Oktoberfest kind of guy?
Haha! I don’t think all of Germany is about beer, sausages and Oktoberfest. Here in Berlin people are not too much into the Oktoberfest (as it’s taking place in the south of Germany).
But – yes, I do love beer! Sausages – I love the Currywurst but it’s more of a thing, I’m not doing regularly (and not at home), it’s more one of these “ah, I’m back home, let’s have a Currywurst” things 🙂
I’ve been to the Oktoberfest a few years ago for a couple of times and I loved the vibe! I have one of those traditional Bavarian costumes, which I’d wear when I go there (it’s big fun as many people do this!) I hope I’ll find some time in the future to attend again…
TMN: What are three things always in your suitcase?
Keyboard. instant coffee. Chargers (all possible kinds but there is still always one missing).
TMN: You just walked out onto the stage to start your body jumping set, what are you wearing, go!
T-shirt, jeans, sneakers and headphones!
TMN: If you were stuck on the runway at an airport and you could only listen to one song on repeat for an hour, what song would that be?
I’d listen to “Aaron” by Paul Kalbrenner – good mood song and never gets boring!
TMN: Did you know gummy bears were invented by a German? Little fun fact for you ☺ I think everyone has a candy they couldn’t live without, what is your favorite of favorite candy?
Of course I know that! It was Hans Riegel (he was based in Bonn) and he founded HaRiBo!! His gummy bears are extremely popular here in Germany and I love them! But asking for the candy I could not live without, it would definitely be the Mars chocolate bar! I can die for that!
TMN: As always Thomas, it is such a pleasure to get some time with you. Best of luck to you this year and many years to come we can’t wait to see everything you touch turn to Gold.
Ah the first signs of spring are upon us. The sun rises a bit earlier and we see still daylight when the work day ends. The flowers are starting to spring from the non-frozen ground and the little animals are emerging plump and bright eyed from their winter sleeps. Another sign of spring in the lovely state of Colorado is the beautiful rainbows that flow in and out of the mountains, and we all know what is at the end of those rainbows, gold. But not a pot of gold, oh no, this spring has brought a new artist to be our resident and that is none other than Berlin’s shining electronic DJ Thomas Gold. If you head to Europe you cannot go anywhere without hearing about the unbelievable Gold who has been trickling his sound throughout the airwaves since 2006. His use of instrumentals mixed with unmistakable electronic sounds gives this DJ an edge that is evident in all of his work. Gold has also produced remixes for the likes of Lady Gaga, Adele, Mike Snow and Fatboy Slim.
Gold is a member of the sound intoxicating Axtone clan, made up of many talented artists. He brought a certain sound to the label that has been almost impossible to put into one category but that fits just fine with the genius artist. He was signed in 2012 by the head of Axtone, Axwell, and their collaboration was official with the release of his album ‘Axtone presents Thomas Gold’.
Gold is one of those artists who is comfortable in any musical situation whether that be in a small sweaty basement bar or on a stage in front of thousands of fans, he always brings the power and emotion to all of his shows not letting one set of feet stay still in the audience. It is because of this amazing energy that Gold’s shows are sold out and his audience is growing rapidly into the United States where his sound is fiercely taking over the minds and eardrums of electronic fans in every state.
Throughout the US, Europe, Australia and Brazil, Thomas Gold presents Fanfare exploded this year as he took his Sirius/Podcast show on the road for an exclusive world tour. Needless to say, 2013 started off with a bang for this Berlin electronic magician. Gold sold out the Roseland Ballroom in New York. On top of that, his news conference was where else but the top of the Empire State building, talk about a way to take NYC by storm, the Big Apple is quickly becoming a musical home for him. Gold released MIAO on Calvin Harris’ Fly Eye Recordings and just wrapped up two amazing sets at Ultra preparing him for the ever busy summer tour season.
It appears that all that glitters really is Gold for this DJ and we can’t wait to spend the first signs of spring getting more intimate with this amazing artist.
Thomas Gold, the German producer and International superstar that needs no introduction, is also one of the nicest guys we have come across. We were able to catch up with him at WALL and ask him about his expectations for Ultra, his musical upbringing and what is coming out for 2013.
TMN: Thomas! Thank you so much for sitting down with us tonight. We’re excited to see your set here at WALL. First off, talk to us about what the energy and vibe is like in Miami for both UMF and WMC.
I have not been to Ultra yet, I am going tomorrow, but as far as I can see, it is amazing again this year. You can really see it filling up. We arrived here on Thursday night and it was still a little bit quite but you could feel that there was something going on. On Friday all the people came in and now you can see it is busy here, it is busy at the pool area, on the streets, traffic jams everywhere! I am super excited happy. I played at Space last night and it was a great night, so much fun. I am really looking forward to the next days.
TMN: We know you tend to go on pretty long extended tours, how do you handling time between performing and producing?
Actually I try to but I am not really handling it well at the moment, I must admit. I am still trying to because I am traveling a lot and it is hard to find a quiet, long period of time to really get into it and switch your brain to the music and dive into it.
So, of course I do a lot of stuff on my laptop and on the plane, at the airport and in the hotels. I have a keyboard with me so I can play melodies and chords, but it is super different from being in a real studio with speakers because on headphones it always sounds different; you don’t feel the music you just hear it. I prefer to be in a proper studio with a nice sound system. I have been touring a lot in the past months and mostly outside Europe so that means I don’t have much time to spend on the studio.
I was touring Europe for the last few weeks and in between the shows on the weekend I can go home to Berlin in my studio, so that means I had a little bit of time but still there was still so much other stuff to do. I am actually taking a couple of days off after Miami just to be in the studio and I am really hoping about getting this stuff done. I am working on my next single and it is just an issue of timing.
TMN: It there any food or drink item that you bring from home that you have to have with you while you are on the road.
No I just bring my instant coffee pack with me [laughs] So that is the only thing I bring and I am glad I have not had any problems through customs. [laughs]
TMN: Is there anything you look forward to when you are touring through American that you like? A certain food or drink?
Yes I love the steakhouses and I love sushi. There are a couple of really nice places in Miami and New York. I just love the food here.
TMN: You’ve played at the largest festivals, venues, and clubs all over the world. Are there any that stand out above the rest?Continue reading →
