Sunday Night Soul [Vol. 20]

Hello ninjas, and welcome to Sunday Night Soul Volume 20. We embarked on this journey exactly 5 months ago with the goal of finding only the best tunes the internet had to offer. What started off as a fairly modest effort, has now grown substantially to the monstrosity you see here (and we mean “monstrosity” in the most loving way possible). We’re proud to see how the field has expanded to include various different soundscapes, increasingly pushing the genre to new limits. It’s an exciting time for R&B music, and we’re pleased to be to sitting right here in the front row, watching it evolve right before our eyes.Of course, you can hear that growth for yourself below.

This week’s collection includes multiple doubles. By doubles we mean you’ll be seeing more than a few names repeated multiple times throughout. Whether it’s through remixes or features, what it indicates is that plenty of your favorites were incredibly busy this week. Standouts come by way of Zuper, Dpat & Atu, SZA, White Lights, Bipolar Sunshine, Gallant, Z.Woods, Mila J, Rush Davis, Muzi, Ta-Ku, Fei-Fei, subdaio, elkco, Lido, ForteBowieTOKiMONSTAFiggy and Dolphin Tears. The Hip-Hop Dojo [Vol. 2]

Welcome back to the Hip-Hop Dojo! It seems just like yesterday we put up the first edition of this humble playlist, but we have all this awesome music to remind of us the time that’s passed. This week’s lineup features some true lyrical wordsmiths, from veterans like Talib Kweli and Ras Kass, to youngsters like Kendrick Lamar and Joey Purp. Although we’re only in our second week, a few artists are already making reappearances like the aforementioned Joey Purp, as well as STSSahtyre, King Chip, and Termanology. Since last week’s post ran a little lengthy, we’ve tried to shorten things by highlighting some of the standout material.

We start things off this week with a more conscious vibe. While up-and-comer Eddy B sheds light on some of his harsh realities growing up, Talib and R.A. The Rugged Man take us for a tour around the globe, exploring atrocities many of us may not have been aware of. Meanwhile, ¡Mayday! frontman Wrekonize also provides us with some insight to personal struggles of his own, and the reasons for his “Anxiety Attacks.”

Toning things down in the next section, we’ve assembled a nice collection of songs to share with your other half. One of the most notable items is “Natural Spring Water” from 2AM Club, who flaunt their roots in multiple genres alongside Wichita native, XV. We also have a few recognizable faces in here too. With Tyga & Chris Brown‘s “Fuck For The Road” comes a story of redemption and renewal, while The World Famous Tony Williams and his (arguably more famous) crew of Kanye WestKing Chip, and Freddie Gibbs, assemble together for a remix of his ode to that special someone. Lastly, we have a new cut from some TMN favorites, THEBLKHANDS, who utilize a brilliant sample of The xx‘s “Angels” to introduce us to the darker side of love.

The next section just features some good old-fashioned trash talking, a language that’s clearly spoken worldwide as evidenced by our inclusion of London-based ItsNate on the remix of his hit record, “WSLTA” which stands for “Where She Learnt That At.” We also get some outstanding verses from the likes of Joey Purp, GQ, Rapsody, Rocki Evans, Blu, and Smoke DZA along with his new R.F.C. crew. Old-fashioned wasn’t just a figure of speech either, as just about all of these tracks have some ill, old-school vibes to them.

As always, we also have a few cuts ideal for listening between 4:19 and 4:21. B.I.C.‘s spaced-out “DOPM” is definitely a standout in that category. Credit is definitely due to Chuk Le Garcon, who creates a trippy, ethereal beat for the boys to spit on. We can’t forget to give props to Ras Kass for coming up with the possible line of the week on Termanology’s “We Stay High,” spitting, “I’ll put a rapper in a wheelchair like Degrassi.” Sahtyre‘s got a real banger for the second week in a row, with his powerful new single, “Gettin High.”

Speaking of bangers, we’ve got a real treat for you with our next two songs, both featuring prominent samples. While STS definitely does his thing over Kavinsky‘s “Odd Look,” Zak Downtown and Murda Mook absolutely tear apart TNGHT‘s “Higher Ground.” Finally, we decided we’d wrap things up with some uplifting music. “Jordan vs Bird” is a triumphant song from Puck, a unique rapper, who proves he won’t let being resigned to a wheelchair prevent him from taking the court.

I hope you guys enjoyed our second edition of The Hip-Hop Dojo. As always, if you have any suggestions or submissions, feel free to send them over to baseer@themusicninja.com.

[NEW] PSY – Gangnam Style (Diplo Remix) (Feat. 2 Chainz & Tyga)

If you thought the “Gangnam Style” craze was over, you’re sadly mistaken. Arguably the hottest song over the last year, now has one of the oddest remixes of the year. With Diplo at the helm, the K-Pop hit gets a whole new dimension of springiness behind it as it’s transformed into a certified trap anthem. What really helps get the song popping are the verses from 2 Chainz and Tyga (I guess Lil Wayne and Drake weren’t available). They aren’t going to impress you with their lyrics, but they’ll definitely get your head bopping, which is all that really matters here. The main thing I really want to see out of all of this though, is a brand new music video featuring 2 Chainz trying to do the dance. That would be awesome. For those wondering, this is an official remix, and it will be on PSY‘s Gangnam Style (강남스타일) [Remix Style] – EP, out today on iTunes. Also included below is the full version of Afrojack‘s remix of the track, which is also on the EP.

[Hip-Hop] Tyga – Molly ft Wiz Khalifa and Mally Mal

There is no denying that Molly has become a staple in rap music and party anthems everywhere. From  to Trinidad James to Juicy J,  this infectious little pill or powder form has been boasted and dropped by rappers for the past year. So with this exposure to ecstasy inducing drug, there was only a matter of time before a rapper took the chance to make a song dedicated to it, enter Tyga. The YMCMB rapper flows over the synth-heavy computerized beat sampled from Ricky Gervais‘ “Molly”. Bringing in the weed-toting Wiz Khalifa and newcomer Mally Mall to drop a couple bars about big bank accounts and love for MDMA, this addictive banger may just be as big of a hit in the clubs and radios as Tyga’s “Do My Dance”. Both singles can be heard on the young emcee’s upcoming album Hotel California, dropping March 26th.

[Hip-Hop] Dom Kennedy ft. Tyga & Juicy J – My Type of Party RMX

Back with the heavy droned synth, Dom enlists Tyga and Juicy J to talk about their types of parties — drugs, girls, and of course haters. Filled with one-liners that you would expect from the three rappers this song trumps it’s predecessor. The highlight is when the beat shuts down for Juicy to get trippy until the tambourine (or drum snare) gets the song on it’s feet. All in all it’s a great song to bump on a fall drive.
