VenessaMichaels isn’t messing around. From Aaliyah to Destiny’s Child, her remixes fuse together the best components of house, club, and bass music into bright and buoyant experiences that can instantly turn your day around for the better.

This wild rendition of Alex Newell‘s “This Ain’t Over” cranks up to eleven right out of the gate with prominent vocals that guide the vibrant production from club kick patterns to gospel chords while simultaneously firing on all cylinders. It’s catchy, contagious, and cool all at once. VenessaMichaels has nailed down her sound, and it’s a sound that anyone and everyone can enjoy. If you can’t manage to dance even a little bit while listening to this new remix, you might want to reexamine a few things. Luckily, Nest HQ came through big time on the premiere for this tune, and, with releases like this, the #2090 life is a movement you need to be keeping tabs on. Just a few weeks back, when the calendar still showed 2015, we had the ultimate pleasure of catching VenessaMichaels‘ live set at Vinyl Nightclub. After her playful, inventive, and oft-bass heavy showcase, we sat down with her in the green room to talk about everything from how she became a musician, to some of her dream collaborations.

TMN: Hey Venessa! Thank you so much for sitting down with us tonight, and for being our last Resident Artist for 2015. Also, welcome to the Mile High City! Is this your first time playing here?

VM: Thanks! It’s my first time in Denver, in general, and I’ve heard a lot of great things. I love it here! Good people.

TMN: We just premiered your latest remix, which is an amazing interpretation of “Are You That Somebody. How did you land on that song as your next project?

VM: Well, I’m a 90’s kid at heart, and it’s definitely inspired my music in general. Honestly? It’s a classic, just like “Say My Name.” I don’t think you can know anything about the 90’s without knowing about Aaliyah and Timbaland and “Are That You Somebody?” It’s just the truth.

TMN: For our readers who don’t know what you’re #2090 style means, can you fill them in a little bit?

VM: #2090 is basically my interpretation of this future 90’s style. I’ve taken a lot of influence by nature. I’ve genuinely become influenced by the 90’s just by growing up with that kind of music. The remixes are a good example of what #2090 is, but my originals and the artists I’m working with were written with a 90’s style topline, but with a new sound underlying it.

TMN: Even looking past your two latest 90’s remixes, we can hear that style carried throughout your other tracks as well, including “Whatcha On.” We heard that everything just kind of fell into place with that track, which is incredible because the production and vocals seemed like they were made for each other, stylistically. Care to elaborate on how that all went down?

[Resident Artist of the Month] Introducing: VenessaMichaels

Well, 2015 has been one hell of a year for our Residency program. Looking back, we’ve featured all kinds of artists, big and small, giving you a taste of some of our favorites in the game. To close things out, we’re roping in one of our favorite up-and-comers, Ms. VenessaMichaels.

If you’re not familiar with her #2090 style, you certainly will be after we highlight her and her work over the next few weeks. We just premiered her latest remix a few days ago, and we have a lot more on deck, including this tasty selection of her music. Are You That Somebody

Once again, we find ourselves simultaneously feeling older than we rightfully should, while also relishing in the nostalgia that comes with hearing one of the most iconic songs from our high school years. Once again, it’s at the hands of decade-blending Producer/DJ VenessaMichaels. And, once again, we’re grinning ear-to-ear as we take in her latest interpretation of a 90’s dance tune.

The affectionately coined style of #2090 is just as it seems – a perfect illustration of this artist’s love of the 90’s and dance music of today. Her latest effort is a delicious, dancy, future bass interpretation of the Grammy-nominated “Are You That Somebody,” from Aaliyah. Amidst the well placed clicks, pops, and drips, we find surging synths, and artfully-crafted vocal samples from Aaliyah, Timbaland, and that unforgettable cooing baby from Perrey and Kingsley’s 1966 hit “Countdown at 6.” The combination is something that comes together effortlessly, as if elements from these two decades were made for each other.

Aside from those warm-n-fuzzies from the past, and the TMN HQ dance party we’re currently engaged in, we’re excited about this premiere for another reason – we’d bringing in VenessaMichaels as our next Resident Artist of the Month. She’ll be following up Flux Pavilion, and helping us ring in the new year with some exclusive content.

Venessa Michaels is one of those newer artists that every one is jumping on. She’s got the talent, she’s got the brains and she’s got the look to continue causing a stir in the music industry. She’s had a string of originals recently, but now she’s here with a futuristic jersey club influenced remix of “Weight In Gold” by Gallant. Her signature style is infectious, packed with the spunk you want in a true dance record. After all, that’s why we’re here for this music right? Venessa is a breath of fresh air, and every time she releases something, ears gravitate. If you haven’t heard of her already, then this track will have you hooked like no other.
